Invitations - need or not?

Invitations - need or not?

Do invitations have to have an inner envelope? What is exactly is the point of it?
I am going to order pockefold invitations, so when people recieve them, they have to open them up anyway. To get inner envelopes would cost more money. I don't see the point of getting them, but my parents keep stressing the fact they have never seen an invitation without the inner envelope. I don't want to deduct from the formality of the invitaion; do you think not having the inner envelope would do this?

My invitations don't come with the inner envelope option. My parents felt the same way but we went with them anyway!

I want to have the inner envelope to specifically write on it who is invited and with/without a guest...just so there is no confusion (my family is known for bringing stragglers). For example, on the outside envelope I may write 'The Smith Family' and then on the inner envelope it would be Aunt Sally, Uncle Sal, Sammy & Guest (engaged), Daniel, Chris & Keith.

I also like it because it is very formal, but it's definitely not a necessary thing...especially for a pocketfold, IMHO.

IMO you need the inner envelope. It should have the name of the invited person and 'guest' if they can bring someone with them.
Also if you are inviting someone (John Doe) who doesn't live with the person (Jane Smith) they are dating, you would address it to John Doe but the inside envelope would say John Doe and Jane Smith.

I am doing pocketfolds also & I don't see the need for the inner envelope. I just felt like it would be too annoying for my guests to have to open 2 envelopes and then untie a ribbon to get to the actual invite. The paper is pretty thick so I am just doing the outer envelope.
ETA: I am putting & guest or the actual person that my guest will be bringing on the outside envelope.

Yeah, this is what I was planning on doing.

No names on the inner envelope here either. I just put invited guests on the outer envelope.

My invite has a patterned pocket inner envelope so I couldn't print the names, I would have had to use a label and I didn't want that.
