Invite that says 'money from Invitees, NO Gifts'..
Original post by Kathy116
Am I the only one that thinks this is a little pushy or just 'different'?
It's from a BRIDAL SHOWER invite that I received.

I personally could never understand why people have engagement parties… you are celebrating the union by having a wedding. What is being celebrated at an engagement party? The fact that he decided to propose?
We had an engagment party.... That is exactly what is being celebrated at an E-party the fact that we are going to get married and that we got engaged.
We had an e-party too!! We had a nice small brunch with just immediate family and close friends. Together, we celebrated the announcement of our engagement. I would have it all over again, if I could.

hope this doesn't sound stupid - but if everyone 'abides' by this and brings cash - what are you going to do for 4+ hours at the shower??? opening presents is always a big part of the shower!!

I am not for putting any sort of registry stuff in any invites but that is just me
But I would be horrified to get something like that. Honestly - though is there a chance the bride doesn't KNOW that her BM's did that? It would be a shame to penalize the bride IF she had no idea that this was done

That's awful! The only way I could see asking guests to do that is if the person doesn't live close by where the shower is and it would be a problem bringing everything back.
I know someone who lived in FL when she was pregnant but they had the shower here cuz that's where everyone lived... So they took all the gifts after the shower, returned them, and then rebought them when they got back to Florida...
In THAT case I could have seen asking for money... but not in that way! :)

It's rude. People are known to do that, but not in that way! My cousin wanted only money for his wedding gifts, so he and his wife had a little poem they put in there. I don't remember it now, but it was better than 'GIVE ME MONEY!'

hmmm....i totally agree that the request for $$$ over gifts was innappropriate (ok tacky)...but i will say this...the point of a shower is gifts!!! that's the whole history of showers! i wouldn't want gifts mentioned in my invite but i also think a shower is not a shower without gifts! the whole shower usually revolves around opening gifts!
anyway, thought this might be interesting to some:
History of the Bridal Shower
Legend has it that the first bridal shower was given for a Dutch bride with a broken heart.
Her father had refused to give her a dowry because she intended to marry a poor miller. The lovers married despite the threat of poverty, and the groom's friends pitched in and 'showered' the bride with gifts of household necessities for their new home. Thanks to the shower, the bride's heart was mended -- and her cupboard was stocked.
That generous practice has become a wedding tradition, occasionally snowballing into multiple showers given by friends, bridesmaids, business associates, and both families.
Re: Invite that says 'money from Invitees, NO Gifts'..
Just a thought to those who are worried the bride may be penalized because of tacky BM's.....I think the Bride knows---otherwise she'd have registered!
Can you imagine this whole money scheme backfiring? She's gonna get thousands of pieces of tupperware, a rainbow of towels in colors she cant stand.....
I almost wish her BM's or someone talked her into creating just a small registry... This way once everything was bought, hopefully the other guests would just give money by default.....
JMO!

BOY has this topic generated interest LOL
My thoughts regarding stars & celebs .....i am OK with their wedding 'gift' going to charity
But the fact they 'specify' something (money or whatever) was my view....

I just think its different with stars and imo the fact that they said don't give us anything give it to charity makes me feel good.

hrm I think I can understand the motive but what a poor choice of words.
I've seen 'no wrapped gifts please' but never so obviously money instead.
*shrug*
Figure she'll get what she gets.
