Inviting little ones to the wedding - need help

Original post by pooh57362

Hi girls, I need some advice. My brother and SIL had a baby back in October. This child goes everywhere with them, i mean everywhere. They plan on bringing her to our wedding in May. FH and I have mentioned several times we don't want very young kids/babies at our wedding. Not to mention they're both in the wedding party so i can't see how they're going to take care of the baby and be in the wedding at the same time. How can I nicely tell them that they can't bring the baby to the wedding without insulting them. I can't put 'adult reception' on the invite b/c my cousins are coming and they're 11. The LAST thing I want to hear on my wedding day is a crying child, i'm sorry if that sounds selfish. What should I do?

that's a tough one...
your brother may get very upset... i know i would if my brother wouldn't allow his future niece/nephew to his wedding... actually, i'd be FUMING...
this leads me to my next thought- how would you feel if he tells you that you can't bring your kids to his wedding?

A wedding is no place for BABIES. Therefore, if I had a baby and my brother was getting married a few months later, I would DEFINITLEY NOT want my baby there. Is the baby going to remember that day? Heck no! So it's pointless. If anyone in their right might really wants to bring their baby to a wedding, it's for their own selfish reasons. (and I don't think I need explain what those selfish reasons are!) JMO!

wow!!! ouch---i just want to say that 7 months is still a short time from having the baby, some moms r just not ready to be apart..before u call people selfish maybe u should looka t it from a moms perspective.....and a side note my sisiters kid will be a baby and i def want her there..i dont care if she remembers she is part of my family and my wedding will include my family...i dont think my sisiter is selfish for wanting to show her daughter in 10 years her aunts wedding..JMO

I just feel like adding my 2 cents

My FG will be almost 4. She will be at the reception.

My RB will be 3. He will be at the reception.

My BM/GM's son will be 14 months. They plan to bring him to the wedding and I have no objections.

We will have a few children (family) 10 and under.

I have no problems with this.

My friend had this problem with her SIL when she got married. She had her mom act as the bad guy. Basically this was an issue of her SIL blatantly saying that she wanted to bring her baby because the new baby should be the center of attention of all the family at all times. In other words the baby was more important then the bride. So that is what set my friend off. They told her straight out that she could not bring the baby.

But just in case the SIL brought the baby anyhow, or anyone else brought children for that matter, they hired a babysitter to be at the Reception Hall. If someone had brought a child they would have just given up the bridal suite to the children and babysitter. Luckily no one brought children so they had the sitter guard the card box instead. My mom wants to do this even though we are doing everything we can to tactfully tell people no children, like under hotel accommodations we are writing, 'please let us know if you would like us to help you arrange babysitters during the reception.' Actually I think my mom worded it even better then that.

EXACTLY my point! Some people think they can show their baby off at the expense of your wedding.

BTW...I'm not talking about 2, 3, 4, or 5 year olds. I am talking about babies.

i am just going to chime in - my cousin came with his baby of 6 months old at our wedding. He knew the baby was not invited so in respect to me and my husband he missed our ceremony and came for the rest of the party. Which was fine. The baby actually didn't scream or do anything. We were lucky!

I didn't want children outside of my niece and nephew (fg nad rb) both 7 and most people thanked me because they had an adult night out (made it a date night), there is nothing you can do POLITELY if they show up with the baby but if the baby makes a scene your MD should help you out on this. To be honest you will be so busy you will not notice if one kid shows up.

I think it depends on you and your dh's vision of the wedding with or with out having kids there.

FH is an only child but he has cousins that he is very close with that he considers siblings more than immediate family. One of his cousins just had a baby right before my brother did. I know for a fact that she would love to bring her baby and I'm going to tell her no but say yes to my brother? My brother had a 'no kid' policy at his wedding in fact my little cousins who were 6 weren't allowed to come so i can't see why he would be upset. I'm on the fence, i'm not sure what i'm going to do. I wouldn't be offended if he told me i couldn't bring my kids b/c i've been to weddings w/ kids before and always thought it wasn't a place for them.

I think this is your answer then. Tell your brother and his wife straight to their face that you liked their no-kid policy so you're inspired to follow in their footsteps and instill the same rules. Then your next sentence should be 'so, who are you going to leave the baby with?'

Stick to your guns. You don't want children there, then there are no children there, simple as that. I wouldn't invite one baby though, if you aren't going to invite others.
