of where you and FH going to live after you get married?
We do not currently live together right now. We do not plan to buy a house ever and just want to live in a condo or co-op. Tonight we were just browsing and things are just so expensive. We do have a lot of money saved but we do not make a lot of money. I only have a 2 year degree and FH just has a HS diploma so we do not have a lot of potential out here.
Does anyone else share out concerns?

Re: Is anyone else afraid....
I had the same fear until we bought our house this year. It's not in the place I really wanted to live...but we love the house and it was what we could afford. You'll be surprised what sorts of deals they have out there...and grants. I couldnt qualify for grants b/c I made too much...but i was able to buy a house with VERY little down.

It is really not the down payment i am worried about it is the mortgage and the maintenance but i guess you never know how much you can afford untill you actually have to do it

Re: Is anyone else afraid....
we are going to get an apartment together again shortly before the wedding. We really need to fix our credit before we can actually get a decent apartment somewhere...Living in a friends basement apartment only lasted us 1 year and lets just say the girl and I dont get along so well anymore (once she stopped calling me her friend and started calling me her tenant I knew it was time for us to leave...)

I don't think having a degree depends on buying a house condo co-op etc. I think is more about savings and buying something that fits your budget of course. You can't ever go with something above your budget because that is when you will start to have financial problems and you don't want that. FH insist of getting a house instead of an apartment when we move in together because he doesn't like the idea of renting. But we'll see how things go and when the time comes we'll see if we have enough money to to that. I would love to buy a house but realistically speaking with this economy, wedding planning, i don't know how we can deal with buying a house.

I totally understand. We lucked out and our house has a basement apartment -- which helps with the mortgage. But when you are ready...look into home grants. There are so many out there that people dont know about. There is one that will give you thousands if your job gives you like $3000. I didnt have time to wait to try and qualify...so start early. The grants will lower your mortgage and help you save in the long run.

Yeah that helps that is why I would want to by a house. Thanks for the info.

I want to stay on Long Island I love it here. The down payment part is easy, it's the mortgage maintenance part which we will have trouble with.
We heard about the grants though, so we'll look into those.

long island is a tough place to live. but it is a buyer's market right now just remember that. if i could, and wouldn't lose money on my house, i would sell it right now. it's been costing me way too much money to maintain. it's beautiful but it's old and falling apart in some ways (cesspoll problems, electricity problems, etc) i get by but its hard. when you have the mortgage and bills, it's a lot to take on but you just need to budget yourself.

We are currently in the process of trying to buy a home. Its very stressful to say the least. We looked into those grants/assistance programs and its really made for low-income families....not saying I make a lot of money b/c I don't. But in order to qualify you need to have a combined income of less than $52,000 in the state of CT. Its similar in range for NY. Sometimes I want to cry and its also very scary especially with the economy.

yup that is a huge fear of mine. i have no idea how we are going to do it. it scares me that we will not be able to afford anything. i think that we are going to start looking in Pennsylvania because we dont know if we can afford anything around here.

Yes, we would ideally like to buy a house to move into when we're married, but if we can't we'll just rent a place until we can afford one eventually

I just wonder on where we will live. FH's credit isn't the best right now... and I don't think we'll be able to get an apartment until almost right before the wedding.
I do worry if we will get something in time. But I can't control everything. Especially with this whole wedding to pay for.

Re: Is anyone else afraid....
I'm very blessed. My parents had the foresight to purchase 3 homes, one for each kid. They rent them to us at a huge discounted rate and we have the option to buy at a ridiculously low price if we ever want to. We're waiting till after the wedding to consider that option. We don't plan on staying on long island, but we do see the home as an investment opportunity.

I am really not looking foward to stressing about this. It is very discouraging to see how much we can't afford. I'm just praying that it will work out for us in the end and everything will fall into place. If only the lotto were an easy thing to win...

Dang... we don't make that much money either, but certainly more than that combined. We live on Long Island.
Maybe I will entertain the idea of moving to VA Beach.

FH and I are in contract to buy a condo. I'm a little afraid of being able to afford the mortgage payments and save for a wedding. When all is said and done we would like to have a place to live together and have a smaller wedding. Hopefully our tax returns can help us w/ our wedding.
