Is anyone looking to move off L.I. after they are married?

Original post by Maryrose

My Fiance and I have been looking and talking about where we will live after we are married. Since housing on Long Island is so expensive we have been considering to move out of state.
All of our family is here and its really sad to think we will have to move.
Anyone else in the same situation? Any thoughts ideas?

Thanks!

We're not even waiting till after we get married to move. we're probably moving by the end of the summer and going down to florida near disney. its too expensive to live here and we can buy a condo right away so its the best option. thats why im going crazy with the planning for the wedding now so by the time we're in florida, i can just relax and not have to think about details.

Id love to but it would be crazy not to wait until Anthony retires :( He has about 8 years left. Then I might give up my job and start again down in Florida. The houses are going for about the same where we want to go and teachers make much less but at least well be where we want to be.

I would love to move somewhere less densely populated but FH will never leave LI.

FH and I purchased a big gorgeous home in Upstate new York about ten minutes from Woodbury Commons. You should really look into it a lot of people commute from there into Manhattan etc. MY Fh will still commute to Queens for work and me To the Bronx. Real state is good out there. You get much more house for your money. Fh grew up in Queens he agrees. His sisters all live on long island in so called fancy areas. Our house is soooo much bigger and better than theirs it's ridiculous.!

I would love to move out of NY. I love the idea of living on a farm with horses and animals. But FH gets ancy when ever we travel outside NY. Compromise is we stay in NY until retirement age!

I love LI and all of our family lives here but like most of you, we are seriously considering leaving. The prices of housing is rediculous here. We're thinking of maybe Rochester, NY. We like that it is still NY but houses are a 1/4 of what they are here. It is voted the 8th best place to raise a family and the 11th least stressful place to live in the US. We're thinking about it. The major drawback is that the winters are bad- they get a lot of snow. I don't mind cold but snow gets annoying after a while.

I can't see myself moving away from my family but the cost of living here is so high and things are so tight that I don't think we have another option. It's bad enough that after we get married we will still have to live with my parents because it's too damn exspensive out there. It tears me up everytime I think about it. Especially since FH won't be able to work for such a long time because he has to wait for his work visa first. So it all lies on me and you all know that it takes two incomes or one really BIG one to do it and I can tell you right now that my mere lil pay check will never cut it here.

Well, I rather not move out of Nassau county but we Can't afford LI we love it and our both of our family's live here , We might have to Buy a co-op in queens Glen oaks Its kinda like LI but no LI taxes ..

I live in Glen Oaks! my FH and I bought in August 2005. I'm from N. Massapequa so I figured this was as close to LI as we could get, FH Refuses to pay LI tax since we have no children. It's nice here, good location and close the the highways (northern state & cross Island)

Thank you all for your responses.
We are actually looking into moving to Charlotte NC.
We are going down in July to possible purchase a house.
We were down there in November 05 and loved it. But it kills me to leave my family.

but what else are we to do?

we've been thinking about it. We've tossed around the idea of Brooklyn, NJ, CT. We need to stay close -- I will always be working in the city.
