We are getting so frustrated trying to find a house. NY is so expensive. I don't mind living here but DH hates NY. just for kicks the other day i went on realtor.com to check out prices in Charlotte, NC.. wow ! you have to see what kind of house you can get for $400K. this one house in particular looks like a mansion. last night DH was talking to an old friend who moved to NC. he said he pays only $1k in taxes a year also, he said Charlotte is booming with jobs in almost in every industry. Heard alot of New Yorkers relocated to NC. DH said he doesn't know if he can deal with the heat. his friend says it can reach 103 degrees. doesn't bother me.
of course, i don't know if i can leave my family & friends behind. maybe i can convince them all to move

Re: Is anyone moving out of NY or thinking of it
i would KILL to move the heck out of the tristate, we're in NJ - i hate nj in general. the taxes, house prices, etc. my FMIL pays $11K a year in property tax.
though i like the prices and quality of life in the south, i don't think i could handle the heat, we're more cold weather people.
we visited the denver area 2 yrs ago and fell in love with it. we watch these 'first time home owner' shows that always take place in that area and i feel like crying every time. amazing homes for like $220K and moutains and snow, so beautiful.
problem? fh LOVES his job and friends. we are never leaving. i meet new people wherever i go. i've lived in nyc and nj andmet new friends and gotten new jobs, i love fresh starts.

I would move in a SECOND!!! I cant stand it here
FH says no b/c he's next in line to take over the business he works so hard for. So he doesnt want to give that up. (even though he HATES it here) But who knows, maybe I can convince him eventually

Nope, never! All of our family is here. I'd rather have a modest house and be able to see my family all the time than a huge one and be lonely.

We really don't like living here, but DH is in the Marine Corps, so we have to be here another 3 years. After that it is all up to whether he re-enlists and we move to wherever he gets assigned, or we move to Sydney, Australia (his home town) or we just find somewhere else.
I definitely DO NOT want to stay in NY forever

sadly, even a modest house sometimes seems impossible to get - but yes, the family issue, i would be lost w/out my mom and aunts, etc.

Re: Is anyone moving out of NY or thinking of it
We made our 'escape' 2 years ago this weekend. We were also engaged 1 year ago this weekend, now that I think about it. We moved to S. Florida and LOVE it.
We left all of our friends/family on long island. Yes, it was sad, and it was pretty hard in the beginning, but it was worth it. But really, its only a 2 hr flight back to see everyone, and I go home every 2 mos. We made some really good friends, and our family visits quite often. We have a gorgeous home in a beautiful, well kept community, decent paying jobs, and I think the quality of life is much better down here. I LOVE long island and always will, but to honest, it's just not affordable to live there.

I'd love to leave under 2 conditions:
1.) The state I move to pays teachers the same (which none of them do)
2.) The state gives teachers tenure (not many do)
I'm stuck here.

Re: Is anyone moving out of NY or thinking of it
It's a really hard decision!!
I moved out to Boulder, CO almost 4 years ago. We just bought a brand new townhouse in North Boulder (something we could never do in NY), and our property taxes are $950 a year. The quality of like is amazing..its absolutely gorgeous, affordable, people are so nice and theres tons of SPACE!!! BUT I totally understand the family ties keeping people in the NY area....I miss my family and friends a ton, and don't get home as often as I would like..its a 4 hour flight and kind of a hassle. As much as I love it out here....makes it tough. its definitely a trade off. I think the answer is to uproot all your friends and family and take them with you

We thought we were going to stay here- found a cute little house that I posted on before, but as it got closer we realized we were gonna be in over our heads. We are still thinking of Raleigh. One of my BM lives there and I love it there. That is probably where we will end up unless we make some crazy cash at the wedding!

i don't think we will moving out of state anytime soon. very hard to leave our family. my parents are especially dependent on me. down the road i would consider it.
i just very discouraged with the cost of living here i just can't believe how much cheaper the housing is out of state.

Re: Is anyone moving out of NY or thinking of it
We had the same problem but ours was in Boston, we ended up moving 1.5 yrs ago to Ohio. Yes we bought the big house for next to nothing, however it became increasingly hard to find jobs paying the same as MA. Yes they are here but getting them is a completely different story! We actually owned our house for 6 months before we even moved. It has been in forclosure 2 times and we have saved it. We hate it here. Matter of fact after the wedding we are thinking of putting it up for sale and moving. Granted in MA we will not ever be able to own a home unless is is a condo or small townhouse. But at least there we know we can afford our bills (my previous boss has never filled my position and asks me once a month will I come back) and have a life. My advice is before you actually make a move like we did go there and actually look into the economy. Where we screwed up is the fact that we 'listened to everyone' and not everything you do see online is how it is. Yes they advertise good paying jobs but alot of companies will under pay you once they get you in the door. Personally I have 14 years experience in my field and it took my 1 yr to find work that i didn't have to drive 2 hours for. Then i did drive 1 hour. Then I got fired over me complaining (and had proof, recordings) of harrassment by a new employee. I had been at this company a yr and increased buisness 205.6% in 6 months. I know I sound bitter but yeah I am. I just suggest that you look into EVERY aspect before taking o a move like that.

I thought about moving, actually moved and now ?I'm back in NY.
We relocaed to Florida and the economic/job situation down there *****! I'm not trying to discourage anyone but the second I left I started to miss NY...it may be expensive here and crowded and whatnot but there is no place like it and I couldn't be happier to be home.
Good luck in whatever you decide to do

When did you move back??? Glad you are happy.
We are moving to New Hampshire next year. Prices are amazing, taxes are low, jobs are good and it's not too far from NY, where my family is. (FH's is scattered, parents in FL) PLus, it actaully snows there, and we loooooove snow.

I am not doing it but seems like alot of people are making the move now bc of the insane prices.
I say go there on a mini vacation and see if you would like to live there. You do get alot more for your money in NC. You could always move there and if you dont like it you could just move back, nothing wrong with trying it out.

Re: Is anyone moving out of NY or thinking of it
yeah its always alot easier said than done. my friend's brother moved to Viriginia & said its really slow. its tough to leave my family behind
i'm just getting so impatient. its really tight living in a 1 bedroom apartment. the biggest PITA is taking our laundry out. looked into getting a washer installed. but it would be one of those compact ones. they only can handle really small loads
oh well.. we shall see.

It definitely is alot easier said than done. Sit down with your DH and really talk about this seriously and see if this is sometihng the two of you can do. The best way to see the type of lifestyle there is to go there on vacation to get an idea of what it is like.
