Is anyone moving out of NY or thinking of it

Original post by shoegal68

We are getting so frustrated trying to find a house. NY is so expensive. I don't mind living here but DH hates NY. just for kicks the other day i went on realtor.com to check out prices in Charlotte, NC.. wow ! you have to see what kind of house you can get for $400K. this one house in particular looks like a mansion. last night DH was talking to an old friend who moved to NC. he said he pays only $1k in taxes a year also, he said Charlotte is booming with jobs in almost in every industry. Heard alot of New Yorkers relocated to NC. DH said he doesn't know if he can deal with the heat. his friend says it can reach 103 degrees. doesn't bother me.

of course, i don't know if i can leave my family & friends behind. maybe i can convince them all to move

I always said I'd never leave NY. But I also said I'd never get married.

FH wants a house with a backyard and your neighbors not three feet away. have lots of family in PA- Doyelstown area..about 45 mins outside of Philly. The homes are beautiful, prices are great, taxes pretty low. he can get a transfer out there and probably a huge promotion as a district director and I can stay home and raise the kids. That could never happen here (in Fh's field). It's a 2 hour drive away ..and I think eventually my parents will move there too, since so much of our family is here. FFIL and his wife will most likley move to Arizona when fh's stepbros are in college so, either way, we'll hardly see them.

We so want to get out of NY. We have talked about it while we was dating and we came across NC. The housing in NY is crazy. With both our salary combined it is still hard to live in NY. We will get so much of our money some place else. Even though my mom is in NY, I will miss her but I have to go where it is better for DH and I.

We contemplate this all the time. Both of our families are here on L.I....my dad is in Jersey. We think about moving upstate (FH works for NY state and can get a transfer), but I don't want to be too far from the city. I still love it here. We have also considered PA...we really love it there. But the state jobs there are only seasonal, and even though the cost of living is less, I have a feeling that the salaries will be too. FH hate living on L.I....I'm getting sick of it too....too many people here, yet I still want to raise my children in NY...there is so much here. It's really a lot to think about. Once you move and buy a house, it isn't easy to move back....why not visit first, and if you like it..then rent for awhile and see how that goes? Just an idea...

I know where you're at though....

Um... since I found out i'd be moving back to NY LOL

I want to move back to CA sooooooo badly. But unless we win the lottery, that's never gonna happen

We're talking about FLA, that's my second choice anyway. But it'll be at least a year, prolly 2, until we can move

I made the decision many years ago to live where I was HAPPY instead of where my parents are... It's better to be happy and apart then hating my area just to be near them. I still see them 2 to 3 times a year anyway. YMMV lol

I thought about moving, actually moved and now ?I'm back in NY.

We relocaed to Florida and the economic/job situation down there *****! I'm not trying to discourage anyone but the second I left I started to miss NY...it may be expensive here and crowded and whatnot but there is no place like it and I couldn't be happier to be home.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do

When did you move back??? Glad you are happy.

We are moving to New Hampshire next year. Prices are amazing, taxes are low, jobs are good and it's not too far from NY, where my family is. (FH's is scattered, parents in FL) PLus, it actaully snows there, and we loooooove snow.

We were offically back as of May 27th!!! I could not be happier.

edited because I sounded really bitter

Re: Is anyone moving out of NY or thinking of it

WE are considering moving to Raleigh, NC. WE where moving there last summer then decided to stay here till after the wedding. My FMIL, FFIL, FSIL FBIL and nieces all live there. My fbil and sister in law moved there about 6 years ago and absolutely love it. We have been down to visit many times and have a great time every time we go. It is a very hard decision to make we keep going back and forth between here and there. My family is here and it will be very hard to leave them. However, I am thinking about the quality of life for me and my fh and for our future children. NC has the nice country/community leaving. All the houses we have looked at here are in the $400,000 range and need massive amounts of work and the taxes are around $8000. The houses we are looking at in NC are huge, at least 3000 square feet, and are about $250 and the taxes are about $2000. We sat down and made a chart with how much we make here, how much we would make there and all our expensives, after the mortgage and all the other expensives we would have more spending money there. And that is with us taking about a $15,000 pay cut each. The decision is prob going to be one of the first hardest decisions that we would need to make tog as a married couple. We are giving ourselves till after our honeymoon in Jan to make the decision. If we decide to move we would need to start going down there and looking for a house and jobs. I am a teacher and they have two different types of school there; year round and traditional. The year round school begins the beg of July and the traditional begins the middle of Aug.
Sorry I rambled on but I just wanted to give you some backround info. As you can tell we are still very confused. If you want any info about Raleigh fm me..

Good luck to all making the moving decision!!!

I guess it would be easier for SH and I because neither of us are from LI. My family isn't far in CT but I do have great friends that I would miss here terribly. I guess we cross that bridge if we have to.

I think about all the time but I won't because:

1. I don't want to leave my mother behind, especially now that she's getting older.

2. I'm a teacher and you can't beat NYC's job security. My brother told me that they just laid off countless teachers where he lives in Florida.

3. Not to sound like a snob but people from down south annoy me a little

4. I actually love Long Island. I was raised here and I love it here. I don't love the financial part but I love the rest -- and we're so close to one of the biggest cities and cultural centers of the world.

omg!!!! you reminded me of something - that thing about having NY ID.

i moved to NJ from NYC (for FH of course) and to this day, i'm slightly ashamed of living here, i know that may sound awful, just the whole jersey stereotype took some getting used to. we were once on vacation in a hip city and i was getting my hair done in aveda, the guy asked where i was vacationing from, i told him NY and when i went to charge my services and products, he asked for ID! i neary passed out handing him my NJ license. i couldn't even explain myself, i was just so embarrassed for lying.

You could always move there and if you dont like it you could just move back, nothing wrong with trying it out.

Thats the problem though - you really can't. Especially if you bought a place. The prices of real estate in NY are so high that if you sell your NY place, move somewhere cheaper...and then decide you want to move back, it would be really difficult financially to come back. My parents had that problem when they moved to Florida. Thankfully, mom loves it now...but they realized that once they moved it had to be for good.

I personally don't think I could ever leave NY. We've moved so much we're done with it. And having a NY drivers license gives me a sense of pride that I just can't explain. So lame, I know - but so true!!! I love being a New Yorker and all of the positive/negative connotations that go with it!!!!

Its definitely a huge decision especially if you grew up here. It is amazing how much more you can get for your money. One of my girlfriends moved to Austin about 6 years ago and raves about it. She opened her own wedding planning business five years ago and its booming. best of luck if you go for it!!!

lol I agree! It also gives me a sense of accomplishment that we bought a house on long island in new york!!!!! We made it happen somehow! We're proud of ourselves considering how high the cost of living is out here..its such a big deal to do that

We have been talking about it. We started to look at homes and jobs down in Charlottesville Va.
But now I have decided I don't want to move. FH said he would give NY a try and see where it takes us. I told him I don't want to leave NY and get pregnant and not have our Mom's or family with us. We do have his aunt down there but its just not the same.
