Is anyone self-employed?

I know that I can't work in the corporate world for too long, it's not in my blood. I hope to start a business within the next couple years (once i narrow down what i'm doing ) .. is anyone else self employed or on their way there? just curious

I have something on the side but it certainly doesnt pay the bill!! Maybe one day it will be big enough that I can support us on it, but for now...small is ok!!

that's awesome that you at least have it going on the side. that's what i'm trying to do now .. not sure if the idea will get big or not, but it might be a fun side thing

Re: Is anyone self-employed?

I started my own business in June and I do that PT for now. It could be FT if I wanted it to be, I'd just take on more clients but I couldn't carry health insurance on my own. My thought process is that by the time we have kids, my client base will be established and I won't have to go back to work FT away from my children and DH will have me on his insurance.

ETA: What are you considering Sonia?

Re: Is anyone self-employed?

I work full time during the week but I have two other businesses of my own on the side.

The first one is EBAY...I sell everything on EBAY. It has turned into a little business for me. Excellent money for gifts and extra spending money when I need it.

The second business is my Car Detailing Business. I work from Mid March till November or when ever it gets cold.

I do all the cars myself, and I do everything by hand. I have been cleaning cars since I was 13 but detailing since 1988. I make around $500 to $700 per weekend, and I dont work every weekend but I do work at least 2 weekends a month.

Maybe when I hit the lotto, I will buy my own detailing shop.

DH and I always come up with ideas but either they're too far-fetched or have slim chances of making it big. the more we sit down to narrow down our choices, the more ideas we come up with i want to do some website design on the side for small businesses/personal sites, but the market is so full of designers.

i don't know .. hopefully we'll come up with something practical soon!

How do you find all the time and energy to do all that!

Maybe shelzyp or other accountants can elaborate on this...but I think if you have a small business out of your home...and it doesn't make a lot of money...you can declalre the business as a loss on your taxes...for mortgage/rent...phone...etc...whatever you need in your home to have you business...

but I'm sure that it has to be a legal business (ie you pay taxes)

I enjoy it...I love to detail cars. It is a great feeling to me to see my customers face when they come to pick up their cars. I know and they know how nasty and disgusting their cars were when they dropped them off....Just to see the look on their faces is the best. I can make a car look like it just rolled out of the dealership. No matter how disgusting it was when it showed up at my house.

As for giving you ladies deals...I will give you a discount. Im good like that. My prices are much lower than if you would bring your car to a shop to have it done. Most detailing shops charge between $150 and $200 for a full detail, inside and out. I charge between $100 and $130 for the same work. Engine cleaning is extra. Trucks and limos are extra too. Let me know if any of you would like it done. I start again in the middle of march....
