If you don't really know anyone who is planning to stay it's probably not a big deal...are you staying at a hotel the night of? If so, I might block just like 10 rooms at that hotel just in case. Most places don't make you pay anything to do it and they'll just release the rooms a month before. it's pretty easy....but if you aren't, and you don't really know of anyone who is, unless it's a really busy weekend I wouldn't worry!

We had friends who stayed at the hotel, even though they live locally .... because we provided a shuttle to the wedding, they were able to not have to think about the 'drinking & driving' problem, and just enjoy themselves!
We also had local relatives who didn't live that close to the hall who stayed overnight too ...
It was really nice to see everyone again the next morning at Brunch in the hotel.

I would block it just in case. We have a lot of OOTers (all of FH's family, many of our friends) plus some of my local friends are considering sharing a hotel room, etc. You never know who will want to.
We're getting free shuttles because of it too

some hotels you do, but definitely not all. Neither of the ones we booked with required that. I would say that more don't require that than do.

we did...most of our guests live in new york but we do have a few OOT guests BUT also our BP might want to stay at the hotel instead of driving back. Theres also others who would prefer to stay at a hotel so this way they can drink. Its always good to give them that option, and whatever doesnt get booked the hotel will just release a month before the wedding

I blocked as a 'just in case' a month before whatever is not booked, you just tell the hotel what you don't need. I feel like at least I gave them the option. Especially that we are going back to the hotel to drink at the bar so if think they will need it.

Definitely block off rooms at a hotel near your venue. You can call and ask for a contract that would provide your guests with a discounted rate - Any unused rooms are NO OBLIGATION to you. They are usually held at special rate for up to 30 days prior tp your fate. If not booked the hotel has time to book people.

We did. Not only is our RH realy far compared to most of our guests I know a lot of people want to stay to hang out at the hotel after and not worry about drinking and driving

If you don't mind me asking...what hotel are you thinking of? I'm getting married at Larkfield Manor in May and i was thinking of blocking rooms at the Hampton Inn in Commack, but i'm in the same boat...i have no clue if we'll end up using 10 rooms or 2.

Re: is everyone blocking rooms?
I had read a review that said that the Hampton Inn provided a free shuttle to and from Larkfield, but when i called they said no (I think they might have stopped it recently but not sure). They do however provide direction cards to Larkfield Manor if a guest asks how to get there. You have until 30 days before your date to book the rooms. I don't know if there is any penalty if no rooms are booked. I need to call again!

Re: is everyone blocking rooms?
I've blocked room because we have a good number of OOT guests, however, a lot of our local guests are deciding to stay overnight so they don't have to worry about driving home and drinking and all that.
You could block a group of 10 rooms somewhere that doesn't make you be financially responsible if the rooms don't sell. Worst case the rooms just revert back into their inventory and you aren't financially liable.

blocking the room give people the option... all 24 people in the bridal party are blocking rooms and so are others that also live on li.. think its good to give the option.

we are pretty much in the same situation...everyone is pretty local...and also the surrounding hotels near my RH were pretty pricey, so we decided against it...it was not a necessity for us
