Is hand-cancelling the invites really worth it?

Just a quick question... is it REALLY worth it to have the invites hand-cancelled?

TIA!

Since the invites can be damaged being run through the machine, I definitely think it's worth it! I don't want the invites I spent a lot of money on getting ruined before they are even received!

It doesn't cost you anything to hand-cancel so I'd say, yea it's worth it.

I thought it was...but the invites still go through a machine once it gets to the 'destination' post office...
I hand cancelled mine and wondered why some got lost or ruined. I sat there w/ the post master mannnny of times!

we didn't hand-canx ours, I personally wasn't worried, nobody is looking at the envelopes, they look at what's inside. We didn't have any lost or ruined.

I'm not worried about the envelopes, I'm worried about the invitations inside getting damaged when run through the machine.

I heard, I think it was on this board, of someone who didn't bother and had a bunch of her invites chewed up by the machines. The thing is, most wedding invites are bigger and thicker and better paper than other mail, so they get stuck. It doesn't cost anything, and it's not a huge deal, so you should do it. You spent enough on the invitations not to want them to get ruined!

This is true. Hand-cancelling just means there's less of a chance of them getting damaged bc it's one less machine they have to go through.

It's certainly not necessary, but I think they look nicer.

yes, we did this, it is not time consuming for you, you just ask the post office to do it. If we hadn't, I KNOW that the ribbon inside our invite would have made the envelope too bulky to go through the machine, and they would have been demolished.

My dad works at a post office and I went there to hand cancel my invites. When I spoke to the clerks there they said that it was a waste of time and they said that they still go through machines so I didn't bother doing it. But if it makes you feel more comfortable doing it, then go ahead since it can't hurt.

I sent out 110 save the dates yesterday, it took him less than 5 minutes to stamp them. No big deal. It's 'ink, stamp stamp stamp stamp stamp', not 'ink....stamp....ink....stamp.....ink......stamp...'
If you know what I mean.

Hand cancelling prevents your invitations from getting stuck and destroyed in a postal machine. It just means hand stamped vs. machine stamped.

I agree....they hand stamp a bar code on the bottom of the invite instead of running it through a machine to be stamped on top. It hink it's worth it becuase it saves your invites from possible getting smushed or bent. It's free...all you do is as the person at the post office to hand stamp it....they do everything else.

When you put something in the mail the Post Office will cancel the stamp so that the recipient can't try to reuse it. They normally do this by running it through a machine. However, many brides bring their wedding invitations to the PO where they can cancel the stamps by hand.

nope, didn't do it and my invitations were fine. now the glue on the envelopes... thats a different story!!

Remember, the mail has to go through all kinds of sorting machines even if you do hand-cancel. Its a waste of time IMO.

yeah, but that's only if the @$%#$ behind the counter don't run them through the machine after you spend all that time and effort hand canceling them yourself.

can you guess what happened at my post office?
morons.
