Is it '& Guest' on the envelope?

If you're inviting someone '& guest', should it say '& Guest' on the envelope or only that person's name?

Re: Is it '& Guest' on the envelope?

I've seen it different ways, but I think the proper way is just one person's name on the outer envelope and 'xyz and guest' on the inner envelope.

Re: Is it '& Guest' on the envelope?

I will do only the persons name on the envelope, the inside envelope should say 'and guest'. If there is no inside envelope you may need it on the outside

Re: Is it '& Guest' on the envelope?

There is no inside envelope, but there might be, I'll check it out. So I guess i'll put '& Guest' on the envelope.
Any other tips, let me know. Thanks.

Re: Is it '& Guest' on the envelope?

Since I have duchess sized invitations (they are huge) and don't have envelopes- i wrote 'and guest' or 'and family' on the outter.

Re: Is it '& Guest' on the envelope?

There are inside envelopes. Which I really didn't want but they're included. I might leave them out altogether though. I never saw the point of them? It seems like it just makes for more work.

Re: Is it '& Guest' on the envelope?

Etiquette dictates that you should NEVER use 'guest' to address someone. Evidently, if you are inviting them to your wedding you should address them by name. And if you dont know, call your primary invitee and ask.

But frankly, this rule was just a little too much work for me to bother with. Nevermind the fact that some of my invitees had no clue who they were bringing. So i didnt follow etiquette.

What I did:

a) on the outer envelope I addressed it to the primary invitee only if I didnt know who he/she was bringing

b) on the inner envelope I listed 'and Guest'

Re: Is it '& Guest' on the envelope?

I've got that problem, I know some of my single girlfriends don't know who they're inviting as their guest and it could change at anytime. So asking them won't help.
I've gotten invites that say '& Guest' and it didn't bother me but I'm not one to pay attention to those things.
And I really think I'm going to leave the inner enevelopes out.
So should I just say to heck w/ it and put '& Guest' on the envelope? Or am I going to burn in eternal ****ation.

Re: Is it '& Guest' on the envelope?

SonicStef- if you don't have an inner envelope- some of the larger invitations don't have them, exactly what should you do? I say & Guest is fine on the outer if there is no inner... at least, that's what I did- maybe Emily Post will come & get me for a etiquette faux pas!

Re: Is it '& Guest' on the envelope?

Assuming you have inner envelopes, I think you are just fine since 99% of the population doesnt know any better and another .05% doesn't care.

PS: Is d@mn really a curse?

Re: Is it '& Guest' on the envelope?

If you know the persons name (as in a couple who has been together for a while) then definitely use it. If you can get a hold of the person to find out a name thats great, but otherwise 'and guest' is fine. Some people don't know until the last minute who they'll be bringing. I tried asking some of my guests who they were bringing, never got an answer, so I left it as 'and guest.'

Hope that helps......

Re: Is it '& Guest' on the envelope?

Thanks girls - I'll put '& Guest' for those that I don't know and the invitee doesn't know and I'll try to find out from the others the names, but I'm not going to make myself crazy over it.
And no inner envelopes!! I'm putting my foot down.
Thanks for your help.

Good to know, I'll spell it out.
Who knew that this stuff mattered?
And I guess d@mn is a 'bad' word!

Re: Is it '& Guest' on the envelope?

I was wondering about it myself and when I read Emily Post's recc's I thought 'get real'! Most of the people who are coming to my wedding are like most of the other brides' friends..they have no clue who they are bringing..the flavor of the day or week. I'm writing their name on the outer and 'name and guest' on the inside.
This stuff is all so tricky...

Re: Is it '& Guest' on the envelope?

This is what I'm doing (I just did the same for STDs)

I WILL NOT have an inner envelope.

IF they LIVE together but not married, I will put

NAME OF INVITEE
NAME OF GUEST
ADDRESS
CITY STATE ZIP

If they live don't live w/their guest or dont know who it is, I will only put NAME OF INVITEE.
I will let them put if they are bringing someone on the RSVP card

Re: Is it '& Guest' on the envelope?

I will indicate and guest on the inner envelope.

Lizlen: Are you not worried that people will put multiple numbers on the response card, ie. indicating 4 guests as opposed to 2 attending?

I know people who would do that if they were not told outright how many people they could bring?
