if I dont take my FH's last name? He is not thrilled I want to keep my last name.
Just curious how many ladies are changing their name & if you think it's mean of me to keep mine?

Re: Is it mean..
I don't think it's mean - I think it's a personal decision. Personally, I will be changing mine. I know all of my accomplishments thus far have my current last name (Bachelor's & Master's degrees, certifications, ect.), but I'm old-fashioned in that one way (not so much in others lol) and want to change my name.

Thank you. I think I may hyphen or leave it the same until we start a family.
Decisions decisions ugh

I don't think its mean at all, just a personal decision as the other poster said. I will be taking DH's name, as I want to have the same name as my kids.
You could hypen it so you can use your original name professionally.

Re: Is it mean..
I'm going to either keep my own or hyphen at work b/c that's what I'm known as in the biz now, but for everything else I am taking his. (I hate my last name anyway!)

I love my last name lol. Only my family has my last name so im so used to people asking about it & butchering it lol. His is ridiculously common & I feel like how can I go from being so unique to extremely common? lol.
Why cant the guy change their last name!? Its 2012! haha

Re: Is it mean..
this is completely a decision of preference. I personally am hyphenating bc I also said from when I was little that I wouldnt change my name
My father laughs and says it's his fault lol
My FH was aware of this when we first started dating, so 6 years later I think he has accepted it, whether he likes it or not. lol. ANd I will have his name, its just added to mine

LOL! I don't think it's mean at all. I know someone getting married who is adding her FH's name but keeping hers so it's like three seperate names, no hyphen: Jane Doe Smith

I'm changing my last name to my middle name since I don't have one. So I can keep mine. Even though it's a common name I'm the last line of my fathers family.

I'm not taking FH's name and no one thought/thinks it's mean! Just a matter of how you feel most comfortable. I personally can't imagine myself with any other name, but I have one sister who totally changed hers and another who adopted our last name as her middle name when she took her DH's. For me, I love my last name, it's meaning, and that it means something really significant because there are no more of us in our family after my siblings' generation.

Its def a personal decision, but I would talk to him about it and if you both agree then it's fine.

I'm changing mine - but I don't think it's mean (or unusual) that you're keeping your name. Lots of women keep their names!

Same here. I went to get a gmail account with my name and his last name and all possible versions of my first name abbreviated with his last name, all have been taken!!! I've never experienced this in my entire life!! It totally sucks and really bothers me.
I am keeping my last name for the time being.
I'm deciding whether or not to make my last name my middle name or to hyphenate, but that seems too long. Not sure what to do...
I'll eventually change my name... I think

Haha funny that you bring this up... I just mentioned to my fiance' the other day that we haven't discussed this. Honestly, I'd prefer to keep my maiden name.... he wasn't too thrilled about that. I will be 30 when I get married, I feel like why should I change my identity and name after 30 years of it? My last name is 8 letters long and his is 9 letters. Hyphenating it would be SO long... but I think I may be doing that....

I know a girl whose maiden name is 6 syllables long and her husband's is 5 syllables long... god could you imagine hyphenating that??

Re: Is it mean..
I don't think its mean. Its YOUR name and YOUR decision.
I am deciding to hyphenate because I just can't get rid of my name completely but I do want to add FH's, especially for when we have kids we'll all be the 'xxx's'. FH isn't thrilled that I am hyphenating, he wants me to change my last name completely but too bad for him. I tell him all the time would you rather I not change it at all? That usually shuts him up
