I don't think it's mean - I think it's a personal decision. Personally, I will be changing mine. I know all of my accomplishments thus far have my current last name (Bachelor's & Master's degrees, certifications, ect.), but I'm old-fashioned in that one way (not so much in others lol) and want to change my name.
ITA!! I'm changing mine

Not at all! It's feminist! I'm from Berkeley, so all my friends had hyphenated names or Mom kept her name, and it was not a big deal at all...we all still knew which mom belonged to which kid. I even had a friend whose Dad took her Mom's name; there are no rules anymore, especially thanks to marriage equality! I will be taking FH's name because I think it's funnier (I know I'm such a grown up ). If you hyphenate, just really think it out. I had a camper once whose last name was Weiner-Mock. Don't name your precious baby C%$#-tease. That is mean!

I know a girl whose maiden name is 6 syllables long and her husband's is 5 syllables long... god could you imagine hyphenating that??
Oh goodness!
Thankfully we're only at 3 syllables each.... which means I will have a 6 syllable last name then, I guess haha

Re: Is it mean..
I am keeping my last name. It has done we well for the past 28 years. Why change a good thing? But seriously its your preference. I would talk to your fh. I know mine is not to happy about it. He is traditional with somethings. However, he choosed a untraditional woman! My name dies with my sister and I. So it means a lot to keep it going with us. I also worked so hard to get to where I am in my career with the help of my parents. If we have kids they will take his name. I'm trying to work with naming one his name and naming one with my name but that might confuse the children! Follow your heart!

Re: Is it mean..
Well thats the other thing. My dad had 2 sisters who all had boys and my aunts took their DH's last name. That left it up to my dad who had 3 girls. One sister took her husbands last name & the other kept hers. Either way, we cant carry on the name which really stinks.
I guess I should find out why it bothers him so much but honestly, at the end of the day its my decision and I really am not budging on this one. Like all of you ladies said, it's been my name for 27 yrs and its a big part of who I am.
He would NEVER change his name so why should I? ;)

I'm just taking FH's name and my son will eventually change his name as well. It's not mean of you...it's your choice. We are both very traditional and I want to take his last name. It depends on both people really. I know FH would never think it's ok for me not to take his name but that's why we are getting married right? because we agree on certain things. If it's important to you definitely let you FH know now and see what he thinks.

Re: Is it mean..
i am definitely changing my name -- however I have not yet decided if I'm going to change it professionally. A lot of women in my field (im a lawyer) keep their own last names professionally. I don't think its mean at all to keep your last name if you want!

I think I am hyphening my name. I rather not change it at all but I want to share the same name as my children so I feel that I have to. I am very attached to my last name and I don't want to let go.

NO! Personally I hate my last name. No one can pronounce it or spell it. It will be so much easier to take FH's!
