Not at all..i've been to weddings with no programs and menus. Nobody said anything about it, I dont even know if people noticed there was none lol
If anything you can probably print simple, nice ones yourself for pretty cheap

Only if you want them. It's your wedding, if you have the time, patience and/or money, also if you want them, then do it. Otherwise, you can just cross them off as things that don't need to be done. JMHO.

Re: is it neccesary?
nope. i'm not doing them. we're getting married at the RH, we have a small BP, absolutely no need for programs. the RH provides a menu, and i don't have the time or patience to do my own. i will see how patient i am about printing out placecards, but that's as fancy as i plan on getting (and the free rose petals the florist is providing).
the only time i ever read a program is when it's a big church wedding w/ a full mass, this way i know who is reading what, and when the end is approaching.

I would say if you're at an RH where the guests order their meals the day-of (not in advance) then maybe a menu is a good idea....otherwise, it's definitely optional! programs as well!

I am only having menus, becuase RH provides them--otherwise I would not be spending money on it---I need to try and keep the costs down

I personally think the only things necessary are the things that you want

Re: is it neccesary?
the RH gives menu cards - so that is enough for me....we might have a placecard christmas tree - so we wont need any extra decorations on that.....the only thing that i might do is programs for the ceremony - but thats just because i want to make them myself and i want to have one to scrapbook and save after the wedding......i think programs are cute - but not necessary

Re: is it neccesary?
Programs: we will be having them since we'll be having a Jewish ceremony and found a really nice model program with explanations of some of the religious traditions. We'll be having a bunch of non-Jewish guests, so I think it's nice to have. (plus it will ID the bridal party, etc)
Menus: Our hall provides menus for us. If we dont like the way we look we might consider making our own to match the programs. We'll see.
Overly decorated placecard table: Our hall provides a huge floral centerpiece for the placecard table (silk flowers, made by our florist in seasonal colors). I'm 99.999999% we're just going to use that. As for place cards, I'm honestly fine with just plain cards, maybe with a small decoration glued on. We might look into something a little more elaborate, but I don't really care -- they are just placecards!
nothing is 'necessary' - it's just whats impt to you!
