Nothing is 'necessary' but it kind of is traditional maybe....

Re: Is it necessary to do favors for weddings?
yes. even if it just a small box of chocolates or candy. I think you might get scattered opinions on this one. I am fairly untraditional, and am all about breaking the rules, but to me, this one is not breakable.

I don't think it's necessary but it is a nice gesture. A way of thanking your guests. It's up to you how you do it.

Do you think making a donation to a charity would be OK?

Re: Is it necessary to do favors for weddings?
i don't think it's necessary. i've been to some very nice weddings with no favors and i don't think anyone noticed it or minded.
donation is definitely a good alternative!

IMO, nothing is necessary.
But, I LOVE wedding favors. We just went to a wedding and there weren't any favors at all. We felt kind of slighted.

That's what we did and everyone thought it was a great idea.

Only if you want to do them. I'm not

IMO a favor is expected and is noticed if it is absent. I actually had this discussion with member of my family (excluding mom) and they were shocked that people would NOT give our favors (they said it was rude)

I don't think so, I'm not doing favors.
ETA: I went to a multi millionaire's wedding a few years back and there were no favors.
I didn't even realize it until a week or so later.

That is very nice.

A ot fo the time if you don;t get a favor you don't realize it until later. But I personally like to get SOMEthing. Even if it's a candy bar that cost $1, it shows appreciation for your guests

Re: Is it necessary to do favors for weddings?
personally, i prefer a donation to an actual favor.
most favors i've received were nice, but not necessarily useful (to me) and they were just sitting in my house collecting dust before being thrown out. but of course, it's just me.

Re: Is it necessary to do favors for weddings?
About half of the weddings I've been to haven't had favors, but most of those were out of state. I think it depends on how lavish the affair is. All of the 'expensive' weddings I went to had favors; the ones where the couple and their families couldn't afford much didn't have them. An inexpensive, quick favor is placecard/tablecard frames.

I don't think it's necessary. That's what the thank you note is about. Every favor I've gotten, I've thrown away. I admit it and I'm sure there are others out there that have done the same. What a waste!

And I think your donation idea is great, esp. if you personalize it by making it in honor of a particular relative or relatives.

Re: Is it necessary to do favors for weddings?
The best, most expensive weddings I have been to have *not* had favors. I personally think they are a waste of money and would rather alocate that money to some other part of the wedding that my guests might enjoy (i.e. better band, etc.)
However, that being said, since this was an uphill battle with my mother who is extremely traditional, we compromised and came up with an alternative. Since I'm getting married Oct 29 (halloween weekend), we're doing a candy bar (thinks loads of candy displayed in different shaped glass vases)near the exit at the end of the night. Guest can fill up cellophane bags with candy on their way out. Since nothing is individually wrapped (i.e. chocolate almonds, etc.) its actually rather cost-effective.

Re: Is it necessary to do favors for weddings?
i toy with the idea of not having favors, i dont think it is necessary because i agree most i have gotten go in the garbage cause they arent so great- even expensive weddings i have been to..but I am having favors, but am determined to find something useful that people wont throw away
