I chose to do donations. I did not want to spend money on something that I thought would just end up sitting in someone's bookshelves. We got a lot more personal satisfaction by making donations and made up nice cards for the tables about the donation. I don't think favors are very traditional at Jewish weddings anyway and no one in my family even questioned it.

I think it is. Either favors or donations but I would find it odd if I went to a wedding and there was no favors. JMO

I don't think it's necessary. That's what the thank you note is about. Every favor I've gotten, I've thrown away. I admit it and I'm sure there are others out there that have done the same. What a waste!
I agree. Generally, unless it was an edible favor, I have thrown them out or given them away. I have kept matchbooks and bookmarks, though.

Re: Is it necessary to do favors for weddings?
I don't think they're absolutely necessary. Small, simple, edible favors, or donations, are probably best. I just wouldn't display a candle or other knicknack with the bride and groom's name on it. If we are going to do favors, they'll probably be half bottles of wine from the vineyard where the wedding is, as a memento of the place.

IMO a favor is expected and is noticed if it is absent. I actually had this discussion with member of my family (excluding mom) and they were shocked that people would NOT give our favors (they said it was rude)
I have been to weddings with no favors and didn't even think twice about it. IMO, most favors are useless to me unless they are edible!

I don't think it is really necessary- just a nice touch.
We are most likely doing the 'perfect pear' candles- also because they will look beautiful on the table and match our colors. We are also doing a donation.

I find something tacky about favors for the most part I mean they get thrown out right away. Isn't inviting someone to your wedding a token of appreciation and gratitude already? I think I am just doing a donation.

Do you think making a donation to a charity would be OK?
Thats what we are doing. Donating to amercian cancer society in memory of my mom and lung assoc. in honor of his mom who is battling lung cancer now....

I'm going to do a donation to the american cancer society in memory of my uncle that past away, but I think I'm also going to attach a little card saying so to a small box of chocolate, maybe a 2 piece box

Went to a wedding a few weeks ago and no one even noticed that there were no favors. I happened to notice since I was on the lookout for inspiration for my own wedding.

I disagree with the folks who suggest it is a must - it is quite unheard of a Jewish weddings. We gave votive candles but other than that would have been considered odd.

Necessary? No. A nice touch? Yes.
I love getting favors and to be honest, I've never NOT gotten them when I've gone to weddings. I would feel slighted personally. I mean, dang, gimme a truffle or somethin...

This is exactly what I was going to say. That being said, we're doing donations b/c it means a lot more to my family. If somebody isn't happy to get some trinket to throw in the back of the drawer, I'm not worried about it.

Re: Is it necessary to do favors for weddings?
Favors are definitely not necessary. How can people go to weddings 'expecting' something and then feeling 'slighted' for not getting something? To me that sounds ridiculous. I always thought that you went to a wedding to help celebrate the marriage of the bride and groom and to have a great time, especially if you are there with people you love. A wedding isnt a sweet 16 or a bat mitzvah where everybody gets a T-Shirt at the end of the night.

Some people would get 'slighted' if there was no cake. I've heard some feel 'slighted' when the traditional garter/bouquet toss was eliminated. To each his own. If you choose not to have them, don't. It's simple.

Re: Is it necessary to do favors for weddings?
Anywhere else I would say it's not necessary, but on Long Island I think it is. It's traditional, especially in this wedding market. I've been racking my brain to do something different. When push comes to shove the favors are usually pushed aside. But for some reason, guests expect them.
