Ok, so I got my ring in January, had my diamond tightened down in April because it was loose (it was making noise when I would shake it next to my ear and I'm obsessed with it falling out) and on Saturday, I was playing with it (I know I shouldn't) and I can give it a half turn from side to side!!! It's loose again!
I called my jeweler this morning and he told me to bring it down tonight so he can tighten it down again. The first time, he said it got loose because 'a round stone doesn't have corners.' (It's a round in a 4-prong setting - the corners are like mini-triangles, kind of like picture frames.) What?! I just was like, 'yeah, yeah, yeah, fix it.' without thinking. Now he said that I 'should expect a larger stone to get loose more often than a small stone' and to not worry, that it won't fall out. What?! I'm not sure what to think.
My mother (the dramatic one) is telling me to get a new setting, that 4-prong isn't safe enough. I don't want a six prong one, though. I'm so careful with my ring (I take it off to wash my hands, sleep, shower, clean...) so I'm wondering if I should get a more secure one. I don't really want to get a new setting though. I know of plenty of girls that have round stones in a 4-prong setting, but I don't know if it's normal for the stone to loosen.
2 times in 5 months! Is this normal? What should I do?

I have a round stone with 4 prongs as well and it has never moved. and I can't believe he told you bigger stones move more than little stones???? I don't know what is wrong with your ring but maybe you should go see another jewler..

Hi-
IMO I don't think it is normal for your stone to be loose twice already. The only way I would think it was normal is if you were really hard on your ring ( i.e banging it around alot).

I agree. I've had my ring since Labor Day 2003 and my diamond is as tight as it was the first day I got it. I don't know how large your stone is, but I don't think that should make any difference at all.

I agree, I don't think the size of the stone make a difference... unless it's in a wrong setting, some settings can only accommodate stones up to a certain size. I don't have a round, so I can't be sure, perhaps go to another jeweler and a 2nd opinion? I would get it tighten ASAP!

I have a round in a 6 prong and it did get loose about a month after I got it 1 & 1/2 years ago and never again since.
I NEVER take it off either, not for anything!!! and I bang it all the time. I would see another jeweler.

if you want I can recommend my jewelers....If you have seen my pictures, you know I have a big stone and I have never had a problem of it being loose...

I have a princess and have had it for six months.
When I first got it, it did exactly what you are saying - I would shake it and could 'hear' it... finally I got tired of it and asked FH's Aunt to fix it (where we got the ring).
Probably about a month later it started doing it again. I can't turn it as much as you but I def. hear it shake. It's been 5 months and I'm not super careful but knock on wood....
I think you should go back as much as you need to to get it fixed...and the only other thing is to get it insured just in case.

You sound like you're really careful with your ring, so you should definitely not be having this problem. I'm with all the other girls who suggested that you see another jeweler. Good luck!

I agree. People have had 4 pronged settings with round stones forever. My moms ring is 49 years old in platinum and NEVER loosened up.

i think you should see another jeweler as well.
i have spoken to a few jewelers and all of them agreed that 4-prongs are just as safe as 6-prongs. and it totally doesn't make sense that 'bigger stones would get loose more often'!!! having to fix it twice in a few months is too much!

Well, I am going to go there after work to just have it tightened down for now. We (fiance and me) know him and he allows us to come in the back with him while he does the work on the ring. It's a shame because he is my FBIL's friend and has been so great - meeting us after hours to get it sized and then to get it tightened (the first time) - but I doubt him now, you know? Especially since I'm so neurotic with taking care of my ring. I'm definitely going to get second and third opinions.
Oh well, if I wind up getting another setting (ugh, which I don't want to do - maybe I can have them only change the prongs? But then they'll be seams where they were attached...) I'll let you guys know.

well, after a 50 lb box of tile fell on my ring in home depot (yes..it was tragic haha) the whole diamond (a big, round 4 prong diamond) was EXTREMELY loose.. i took it to be tightened and to have my band reconstructed lol, and it was fine for a few weeks and then loosened up again. i too heard the shaking noise when i held it next to my ear...so after the 2nd time of being tightened, it has stayed in place. i told the jeweler that i had it tightened one other time before to make sure he did it right. i've had no problems since! so i would still take it back to the same jeweler.

Same here (princess with 4 prongs).... a jeweler showed me how loose it was 5 months after I got it (which seemed to be how it always was) and scared me sooo much. He tighted it up and advised me to come in every 6 months to check on it.
and no it isnt normal and I would get another jeweler to fix it this time.

This is moronic. This jeweler should get you a brand new setting. The prongs are faulty. You should not be having this problem. If you get no satisfaction with this jeweler find another one. Do not give up on this one. I have a 4 prong round setting and never had a problem and I am rough on my hands.
