Ok, so I got my ring in January, had my diamond tightened down in April because it was loose (it was making noise when I would shake it next to my ear and I'm obsessed with it falling out) and on Saturday, I was playing with it (I know I shouldn't) and I can give it a half turn from side to side!!! It's loose again!
I called my jeweler this morning and he told me to bring it down tonight so he can tighten it down again. The first time, he said it got loose because 'a round stone doesn't have corners.' (It's a round in a 4-prong setting - the corners are like mini-triangles, kind of like picture frames.) What?! I just was like, 'yeah, yeah, yeah, fix it.' without thinking. Now he said that I 'should expect a larger stone to get loose more often than a small stone' and to not worry, that it won't fall out. What?! I'm not sure what to think.
My mother (the dramatic one) is telling me to get a new setting, that 4-prong isn't safe enough. I don't want a six prong one, though. I'm so careful with my ring (I take it off to wash my hands, sleep, shower, clean...) so I'm wondering if I should get a more secure one. I don't really want to get a new setting though. I know of plenty of girls that have round stones in a 4-prong setting, but I don't know if it's normal for the stone to loosen.
2 times in 5 months! Is this normal? What should I do?

it shouldnt have moved, i have six prongs, but make sure your prongs are platinum. if they are any other type of metal you run the risk of it falling out. can you buy a new setting? or go to a different jeweler? i would make sure he knows what he is doing.

sounds like your jeweler needs to go back to jewelry school. no offense, but he's feeding you a line of bull.
there is NO reason why your stone would become loose twice within a few months unless you’re mishandling it (which you said you were not) or, the setting is not good.
IMO, take it to someone else and buy a new setting. I know it’s not what you need to hear with all the other expenses you have. But God forbid you lost that stone… you know?
Good luck!

[I agree. People have had 4 pronged settings with round stones forever. My moms ring is 49 years old in platinum and NEVER loosened up.
My e-ring is 75 years old and has never loosened up

I have a princess and have had it for six months.
When I first got it, it did exactly what you are saying - I would shake it and could 'hear' it... finally I got tired of it and asked FH's Aunt to fix it (where we got the ring).
Probably about a month later it started doing it again. I can't turn it as much as you but I def. hear it shake. It's been 5 months and I'm not super careful but knock on wood....
I think you should go back as much as you need to to get it fixed...and the only other thing is to get it insured just in case.
Same here (princess with 4 prongs).... a jeweler showed me how loose it was 5 months after I got it (which seemed to be how it always was) and scared me sooo much. He tighted it up and advised me to come in every 6 months to check on it.
yeah, i'm due to give it back again....but i don't wanna!! waahhhh

I know you must have inherited your ring (how special that must be!) but I read your post and made the obvious joke to myself:
man, you're old

I have never heard of this happening over and over again. I wonder is the setting a high setting and you are banging it and not realizing it... I would go to a jewler that will reset it in front of you, and just try a new jeweler to reset it. We reset my ring and they did it in front of me, they only do it certain days of the week. If you want the name, FM mail me. Good luck with fixing it, and I hope it does not happen again. You should be able to enjoy your ring and not have to go running to a jeweler to refix it all the time.

Re: Is it normal for my stone to be loose again?!
It's platinum - he told my fiance that would be better than white gold (which is what I originally wanted) but I don't want to start another white-gold vs. platinum debate on this thread - and it *is* insured. (phew! But I still don't want to lose it!)
I so hate going to people I know for anything. I already told my fiance I didn't want to return to him for our wedding bands because he makes everything - he orders a cast that you choose from a book and then goes from there. I'm so visual and I need to know what it will look like exactly before I buy it. How can I choose the perfect band from a metal mold? My fiance had him make my ring based on pictures and drawings, maybe that's why it's not perfect - because it's hand designed.
Oh well, at least it will be tightened while I make up my mind about what to do and where to go for a setting.
What do you think of having him change the basket/head and keeping the ring? Will I see sodder or join marks?

My ring was platinum and it was my Mom's it got soft believe it or not, my jeweler told me over time this can happen, I was shocked also. My ring was about 40 years old. I reset it in white gold. And while we were doing that I picked out a new setting, it is a pear shaped ring with 2 sapphire marquise bagueets on each side, it is so beautiful. I went to gennaro Jewlwers in bellmore, they do great work there. They reset etc in front of you on wednesdays and saturdays. Just give them a call to confirm the days. I would reset the prongs, this is just my opionion. HTH

OK,I have a 4 prong round stone, and decided to shake my ring by my ear. I can hear something rattling. Now I'm freaked out too. Called my FH and he thinks I'm a psycho!!! But we're gonna to his Jeweler anyway!!:

I can totally relate to your nervousness about your E-Ring. I am always afraid of my stone falling out or becoming loose. I am actually on a first name basis with my jeweler, crazy I know. But my ring does have a 6 prong setting which my jeweler has assured me is a very very secure setting. So I have been able to be at ease a little bit.

I think you should go to a different jeweler. TThis guy is full of it. The stone shouldn;t be falling out!

Re: Is it normal for my stone to be loose again?!
Just be careful, and get a new jeweler. My Mom had her 1st e-ring for over 20 years (I think closer to 25?). It was a round stone in a 4 prong white gold setting. One day she looked down and the stone was gone That is why I have platinum and 6 prongs. She has an amazing ring now that my Dad replaced it with, but she would give it up in a heart beat if she could have her original e-ring back.

i agree. i have a 4 prong round....never loose, the jeweler you dealt with is faulty......get another setting and make sure you got what you asked for. you said there are litttle triangles around the edge of the diamond. mine has little circles....maybe try that setting.
