SIL has been dating this guy for about 6 months now and they are talking about getting married. They are both 30 and have great paying jobs so they are financially set. They are talking about buying a house already and getting a dog. I think it's great cause she hasnt had much luck with guys in the past, they've all been losers who never wanted to get serious. And lets be honest, she's no spring chicken, if she wants to have babies she should start pretty soon.
DH doesnt like the idea at all! he gets all upset, i think he's just being over protective of his big sister as usual. but i keep telling him that he should WANT her to be happy. He sais MIL wont have any part of it and will say its too soon.
What do you guys think? 6 months too soon???

Re: Is it ok to get engaged after 6 months of dating?
it REALLY depends on the couple. if it seems genuine, then i'd say go for it. if they're the kinda people that don't mind living together before marriage, i'd say rent a place and live together for a while (maybe during the length of the engagement) as you get to know each other REAL fast that way.
if it seems like she's settling, or there seems to be something off (even just a feeling), i'd say wait. i'd rather take the time to figure things out in that situation than rush into something that could end badly.
also, some people (though it seems unlikely in your case) are really just too immature to have a real relationship that soon into it.
but as i said, if it's geniune i don't see anything wrong with it, though honestly for me personally it'd be a little too fast. not to say that it's wrong - i mean me and fh's relationship moved fast (we said i love you after 4 days [we did know each other before hand though]), but i like to take my time in things like this.
remember, she's probably got at least a year from the time of engagement to the wedding date anyway. she's not getting married at 6 months.

I know someone who just got engaged after 5 weeks (and they aren't kids). Yes, I think its crazy. They claim they'll be engaged 1 year... I guess to each is own.

Re: Is it ok to get engaged after 6 months of dating?
We got engaged at 5 months... we bought a house together at 6 months. I was 29, he was 30. We both had our share of relationships and knew what we wanted and found it in eachother.
Granted, our situation was special b/c FH was only Legally separated at the time so we had to wait to get married, but it gave us a lot of time to spend together without the stress of planning a wedding, yet we got to put our lives in order first - yet the commitment of an engagement was there such that we would get our lives in order together for ourselves and for eachother.
I'm still not sure if the wedding will be this year or next year, but I have to say getting engaged what many consider 'too soon' was fine for us and is for most over 30 who have dated much and know what they want. We got a lot of flack about that and even moreso - purchasing the house, but I'm glad we did as housing has gotten ridiculous on LI.
