SIL has been dating this guy for about 6 months now and they are talking about getting married. They are both 30 and have great paying jobs so they are financially set. They are talking about buying a house already and getting a dog. I think it's great cause she hasnt had much luck with guys in the past, they've all been losers who never wanted to get serious. And lets be honest, she's no spring chicken, if she wants to have babies she should start pretty soon.
DH doesnt like the idea at all! he gets all upset, i think he's just being over protective of his big sister as usual. but i keep telling him that he should WANT her to be happy. He sais MIL wont have any part of it and will say its too soon.
What do you guys think? 6 months too soon???

Re: Is it ok to get engaged after 6 months of dating?
DH and I got engaged after dating for 4 months and 2 days. Sometimes you just know when it's the right person. Why wait?
I understand your DH and MIL's concern, but hopefully they'll be able to look past that and realize how happy your SIL is. I'm glad that you can recognize her joy, I'm sure she really appreciates your support!!
ETA: Here's our timeline July 6, 2004 we met July 23, 2004 we started dating August 14, 2004 we said 'I love you' November 25, 2004 we got engaged January 8, 2005 we moved in together June 10, 2006 we got married
And just for the record, DH was 40 (now 42) when he proposed and I was 23 (now 25). The 'M' word was brought up after only a few weeks of dating. Neither of us have ever been as happy as we've been since we found each other, and we wanted to start our life together as husband and wife.

No I don't think 6 months is too soon.....when you know you know. Who's to say that they won't be as successful as a couple that has dated 10 years.
I've had the same arguement with my parents. I started dating a friend of mine (have known him for 14 years) and after 5 months we were engaged. We figured, we both know what we want and it takes some time to plan a wedding.....why wait to make other people happy. Plus at won't point is it OK to consider marriage? Everyone is different. The Mom will get over it just like mine did after the planning started.
However I take everything back if you think she's settling...or thinking 'this is my last chance to get married...'

FH and I got engaged after dating 7 months. We only met 9 months ago! When you know, you know! Why wait if you've got all your ducks in a row?

DH and I knew after only 3-4 months of dating that we wanted to be together forever, but he waited until shortly after 1 year to propose to give me time to graduate school, move to LI and find a decent job and get comfortable.

When you are older, it's easier to know if you want to get married.
I'd be more skeptical and say it's too soon if you were in your early 20's. when you are older, you have more experience and know what you are looking for.

My parents got engaged after 1 month of courting!
FH talked about engagement ring styles within 1 month of dating as well. We didn't officially get engaged until 2.5 yrs later but I think we both knew early on.

Re: Is it ok to get engaged after 6 months of dating?
i think it is ok, you you definetly know you love the person and can handle being with them forever. As for me and my FH we dated 8 years before getting engaged because we were so young when we met - i think it all really depends on each individual relationship
