Is it rude when people . . .

skip the ceremony and only attend the reception? I'm of course only talking about when the two are in different places, e.g., like when the ceremony is at a Church or Temple and the reception is elsewhere.

thanks!

I went to my cousins ceremony in a church and a lot of them didn't show. And not all of them were in appropriate attire. Is it rude- yes and no. Depending what time it is some people still may be at work or just getting home to shower and get dressed. I make sure I'm there for it.

I don't think it's rude at all...but then again, I do sometimes skip the ceremony and go straight to the reception.

For a few reasons:
- if the reception and ceremony are hours apart and in different locations
- I'm not that close to the couple

Unfortunately some people just don't consider it important.....I make it a point to go to the ceremony and hope that people will do the same for me. However, I am getting married at 4pm on a Friday so I know that people will not be able to get off work, make it from out of town, etc. at that time. I knew this when I booked the date, but the most important people will be there and for me that is what really matters.

I say it depends upon how close you are to the couple, where you live - i.e. if you live far away & have nowhere to go in between or just simply cannot make it that early.

I personally HATE when people do that. To me the entire reason I go to a wedding is to see the couple unite...which to me is the ceremony. So many weddings I've gone to have hardly anyone at the ceremony then tons at the reception...to me...it's rude, but it's seem like it's the norm...

It depends. Sometimes I couldn't make the ceremony, but I usually try to make it. It depends on how close I am with the couple as well, but again, I always make the effort to go.

i don't think so. i'd rather be at the reception myself.

If you mean that much to a couple to be invited you should most certainly do all your best to make it to the ceremony!

This is why we decided to get married at the location or the reception. I am sure there will be many more people present at the ceremony than if it were in a church. My ceremony is at 5:30 and cocktail hour at 6:00.

Tons and tons of people don't go to the ceremony. Out of 150, most of the time only 50 show up. In some ways, its kind of tacky but other people, who don't really see the religous aspect of it as important as the reception, have their reasons. I personally wouldn't do that to someone but thats just my opinion.

I don't think its rude... like other people said its depends on how close you are to the couple. If one of my family or close friends didn't come, I would be upset.
I usually try to go, there was once time I didn't - I was shocked to be invited to the wedding in the first place, I wasn't close to the couple, and secondly, the ceremony was in Queens, and the reception was in Holbrook.. that was a little too much traveling for me.

I agree! If you can possibly make it to the ceremony you should get there! There are some exceptions but for the most part it's the most important part so guests should make sure they get there!

I think it depends on the day of the week. I had a Fiday wedding, and I didnt expect a lot of people at the church, because they had to work. It depends on how close the church and reception are in distance and time.
I dont think it is rude to skip the church at all.

I think it kind of depends...

If the wedding is on a Friday... I think it is OK, it is really hard for people to take off or leave super early to go to a wedding... Especially when you have 5 in the same yr... All around the same time (Like I did this summer)

I still did take off and go... But I know it was hard for a lot of other people.

As for Sat and Sun weddings... I think people should def attend out of respect.

I don't think it's rude. Sometimes people can't travel to both places because of work.

Personally, I feel that the ceremony is when you really get married, and the reception is the party after.

If there is not a huge gap inbetween the C and Recep, and work is not an issue, then yeah I do think its rude. If you can come to the big party with food and booze, then you can show up to watch the union as husband and wife. JMO

I think it's kind of rude, but there are exceptions to the rule like work and distance.

Our wedding is on a Sunday at 4:30 and the CH starts at 5:00 in the same location, so I'm hoping most of my guests will make the ceremony as well as the reception!! (That and I'm not putting the time of the reception with the invites!! All I put is ceremony at 4:30 with reception immediately after!!)

In my experience, close friends and family go to the ceremony. Co-workers, parents friends, and other people not as close to the couple will sometimes skip the ceremony. I have a friend that lives an hour away from here, my ceremony is at 3 pm and my reception starts at 7 pm. I don't expect her to come because there's such a huge time difference.
