Is it tacky....

Is it tacky....

FH and I already have most of what we need when we move in together after the wedding. My mother (she is one who bought us most of our stuff) thinks instead of registering for gifts for my Bridal Shower we should ask for money. We are in desperate need of money so it is a good idea in that respect but I am worried it is slightly tacky. I need opinions!!! Is there a way to ask for money without it being tacky? Should I just have my mother do it by word of mouth? Help please!!!

What if you do a honeymoon registry? Or even put gift cards on your registry? personally I don't think its tacky but I could see where someone like my grandmother would.

I wouldn't ask for money...even word of mouth. The wedding is where you're going to receive checks/money. For your shower people want to be able to give you things...if there is no registry they will probably get you items they 'think' you need. Or you'll get gift cards.

If you really do not need any items you may want to start a honeymoon registry so people can buy you things to do there.

Agreed..

EVen though we would rather get money, you can't really ask for it. You can try to limit your registry so people give you money instead. I know some people have a home registry- like to upgrade their house, or home depot and stuff. I also like the honeymoon registry idea as well.

We are probably going to hold off on a Honey Moon, sad I know but the wedding is already going to kick our butts. Cash is better because eventually when we want to buy a house/Apartment we can put down a nice chunk of money. We seriously have everything. All we need is what my Mother likes to call a 'Marital Bed' and a dining room table but my sisters and mother and giving us those as gifts In my family someone is going to have something to say regardless so I guess I should just go with it and not let it bother me.

I asked for $$$ for my BS. DH and I were already living together and in an apt that we didn't have storage space (nor the desire) for china or any of that, so my SIL incorporated into the invitation to give $$$ to use towards our HM.

People do like to watch the bride open gifts and in general just like giving gifts anyway, so I also registered for like 15 things (nothing major, towels, shower curtain, comforter, etc...).

I don't think it's tacky.

yes, it is tacky.

you should never ask for money.

a bridal shower is not a fundraiser.

definitely THIS!!! asking for money or even a honeymoon registry is very tacky. the point of a shower is to give a physcial gift to the couple to help them get started in their new home together not to fund a vacation or anything else

Thank you.

Your answer was very blunt.

I wasn't implying it would be a fundraiser. My mother wants to throw me a bridal shower and we already have everything we need.

Thanks Anyway

I understand why some are against it, but when the concept of 'bridal shower' started, NO ONE lived together, and no one had anything! Nowadays many people have everything they need.

They do give you money back as long as it is on your registry, you dont need a reciept.

It is very tacky to ask for money no matter who does the asking.

I would set up a cash fund on myregistry.com

You can name it whatever you want.. Housefund, honeymoon fund, it doesnt matter if you actually go or not.
You can also add gifts to it from BBB so you can please people.

I understand what you are saying with having everything. By the time the wedding is here my FH and I will have lived together for over 2 years. We have a lot of what we need already. However, I do not feel appropriate asking people to give money. That is just me and only you know the people that are invited to your shower and whether they would be ok with that or not.

We are going to do a honeymoon registry so that it gives people the option and it would help us and try to get the word out that we are really excited for that so maybe people will do that over our other registry!

ETA: The honeymoon fund just deposits money into your paypal account. So it can go towards whatever you want.

i think people should do whatever they want or feel is right for there situation.
other people can have there opinions (and they will) but in the end this whole experience is to make you and FH happy.

If people wanna buy you gifts they will if not, they can give money.

I think it is tacky to ask for money and you should also consider how fhs family might view it. You don't want to seem ungracious. I agree with returning it to bbb for cash that would be the best way in my opinion. I would never ask for cash, big nono for me and my mom would flip if I suggested it or if she got an invite that did.
