Honestly is it tacky to come right out and say that. People will give cash at the wedding. Make a honeymoon registry or look for other options outside of traditional stores.

I wouldn't ask for money. I would do the suggestion of the other bride about returning at BBB.
it depends solely on the BBB, the lake grove BBB does NOT give cash.

Cash is for the wedding gifts are for the shower. I think it's wrong to ask for money at both events. As the other ladies stated, why not do a honeymoon registry?
Otherwise register and maybe you can return everything after!

FH and I live together now and have some stuff but did register for alot too. My shower is Saturday and people have already told me they're giving me $ because they know we don't much room for storage and it's what we need. I don't think it should come directly from you but maybe have mom drop some hints.

Wow... What a slew of opinionated responses. LOL. It's not proper etiquette and people may get offended or whatever. Everyone has different circumstances... I understand where you are coming from. It's safer to just do what someone else mentioned above and register at BBB, get some basic items you'll always need and stuff you know you'll return. Everyone wins. People get to see you open gifts and feel (so special!) like they contributed what they desired to your new lives together and you still can return items to get money to contribute towards the future home you want to buy. Lets face it, we are on LI weddings, LONG ISLAND... homes are not cheap, so I feel if you wanna return items and use some money to put towards a future home or something, then why shouldn't you?!
Good Luck! =)

Yeah regardless of your situation, asking anything about gifts is just tacky, I read in a book that writing 'no gifts' on an invitation is tacky too, a gift is a gift and thats it, even word of mouth asking for money is tacky and really kind of rude i think, honeymoon funds are really nice because were doing one, and we're actually using it for our honeymoon but u dont have to.... You can save the $$

Very tacky, and word of mouth asking is just as bad

Re: Is it tacky....
FH and I are trying to buy a home now. Between engagement party, Christmas, etc.. we pretty much have our entire kitchen and dining wares. Alot of furniture was given to us (gently used) as well. As of now, we are planning to do a honeymoon registry. I think its fine for your bridal party and family to say 'They aren't sure what they need right now but it couldnt hurt to get them a gift card from (BBB, target, wherever)' Also, if you are sure you have everything you need, then have fun with it! Maybe theres that plasma tv you wanted, or some funky decor from pier 1, or even board games for entertaining. You can add personal touches to your registry. Just try to include the little cheapy 'wishing well' gifts to expensive items and everything in between. Good luck!

I wouldn't ask for money...even word of mouth. The wedding is where you're going to receive checks/money. For your shower people want to be able to give you things...if there is no registry they will probably get you items they 'think' you need. Or you'll get gift cards.
If you really do not need any items you may want to start a honeymoon registry so people can buy you things to do there.
Agreed..
EVen though we would rather get money, you can't really ask for it. You can try to limit your registry so people give you money instead. I know some people have a home registry- like to upgrade their house, or home depot and stuff. I also like the honeymoon registry idea as well.
i agree with the two above.

Re: Is it tacky....
I definately agree on registering somewhere. FH & I live together & now with a baby but theres always something you will need.. a newer vacuum, coffee pot, dishes, towels, pictures frames.. it can go on!! But like someone did say you can exchange at BBB for cahs/ or even use it as a store credit for further use! There will always be something you can use!! I didn't think I needed a big registry & just started a week ago & have about 130items but just not china bc I don't find it necessary (IMO i thinks its a waste)

Re: Is it tacky....
Two of the last three weddings I've been to blatantly requested money and the third set up a honey fund. at first, I did think it was tacky. But, I gave my money, and I stopped caring in the end. Whatever the case may be, I think peoples' judgments are short lived.
