FH and I already have most of what we need when we move in together after the wedding. My mother (she is one who bought us most of our stuff) thinks instead of registering for gifts for my Bridal Shower we should ask for money. We are in desperate need of money so it is a good idea in that respect but I am worried it is slightly tacky. I need opinions!!! Is there a way to ask for money without it being tacky? Should I just have my mother do it by word of mouth? Help please!!!

Re: Is it tacky....
I definitely think it's tacky...but I have a honeymoon registry, and you can choose to use the money for something other than your honeymoon.

Personally I think this is bad etiquette. I'm sure this will offend or upset someone ffrom both your and FH's family. I'd suggest creating a small registry, so you will receive some gifts and hopefully others will come with money gifts or gift cards.

Re: Is it tacky....
Have you thought about of Uponourstar.com?
It is a registry where you ask for contributions toward things like a honeymoon, house, new windows, honeymoon excursions...anything really. You get the money people contribute after your wedding date and you can use it for anything. This way people can feel like they are giving a gift and you still get the money. There are fees but I think they come out of the contributions. I heard about it on liweddings.com...of course.

Re: Is it tacky....
I wouldn't ask for money. I would do the suggestion of the other bride about returning at BBB.

i agree with a lot of the other girls that I would not ask for money. Trust me I could use it, but I don't think it's proper etiquette. They will give you money at the wedding so they want to be able to give you an actual 'present' considering it's the only occasion for it. If you do not set up a registry people will def buy you what they think you need and you will wind up with a whole lotta stuff you don't want.
Register for some upgrades (fancy kinves or wine glasses, kitchen towel, bath towels, that new cool rug you wanted)...you can always return it

How about doing an Amazon registry? That way, you can register for all sorts of things!

that's a tought one! I personally wouln't mind to give money but I know some people really consider it tacky. How about registering for some things (like fine china, a nice bedding set, etc) for those people that prefer buying something

Re: Is it tacky....
yes it's tacky.
register for some stuff - i'm sure you can use some upgraded or new things for your home.
if you really don't need anything, then why have a bridal shower at all??? (i don't mean this in a rude way, but just curious) either just have the lunch or whatever and don't have any gifts.
if you don't register for anything people will still go buy you gift cards to places like BBB or crate and barrel. maybe ask for gift cards and make a small registry at one store - that way you can put the cards/return the items and put that money towards furniture or whatever you still feel like you need.

Re: Is it tacky....
I agree with the girls about it being tacky. Someone I know actually put an envelope labeled monetary gift with their wedding invitation. A lot of ppl felt offended! Although it is proper to give $$ at the wedding a lot of ppl feel offended if you are asking for it instead of them giving it to you free of will.

Re: Is it tacky....
If you have everything and would really like the money for your bridal shower then use the wishing well poem (you can put them in the invites). This way you will be telling your guests that you have everything but you won't be asking for money straight out.
I know a lot of girls suggested the BBB return for money idea but be careful with that...not every BBB do that, so its best that you call before hand.
Here is a poem you can use...
More than just kisses so far we've shared Our home has been made with love and care Most things we need we’ve already got Like a toaster and kettle, pans and pots
A wishing well we thought would be great (but only if you wish to participate) A gift of money is placed in the well Then make a wish … but do not tell Once we’ve replaced the old with the new We can look back and say it was thanks to you!

Not sure if i'd call it tacky but I don't really see the point of the bridal shower without the gift-opening portion. It's the best part!

Re: Is it tacky....
There really isn't a 'non-tacky' way to go about asking for cash over gifts.
I do agree that an Amazon registry is a great idea. You can register for everything from video games (and systems), iPods, workout gear, books, blankets...it's pretty endless. You guys might want to look into that?
Women that attend showers generally like to watch the bride open their gifts...it's kind of the whole point of a shower, and from all the showers I've been to, the gift-opening-bonanza is the main event and games are built around it.

Re: Is it tacky....
You really should not ask for money directly. The whole point of a bridal shower is the help the bride set up her new home.
I think the girls had some good suggestions though
1) Some traditional home gifts. I'm sure there are a few things you need, or a few upgrades you could use. You'll need bedding and sheets for the 'marital bed'
2) Register somewhere like Amazon where you can register for gifts but maybe something more non-traditional.
3) Have your family make it a themed shower, so maybe a 'bedroom'shower where you'd register for the bedding, but they could also get you lingerie, or a recipe shower, where they have to bring a recipe along with one of the ingredients to make it.
4) Do a honeyfund or something similar. You can choose what gifts you want '$$ toward our honeymoon flight' or 'Money toward our apt downpayment' and the money goes right into your PayPal account.

We are probably going to hold off on a Honey Moon, sad I know but the wedding is already going to kick our butts. Cash is better because eventually when we want to buy a house/Apartment we can put down a nice chunk of money. We seriously have everything. All we need is what my Mother likes to call a 'Marital Bed' and a dining room table but my sisters and mother and giving us those as gifts In my family someone is going to have something to say regardless so I guess I should just go with it and not let it bother me.
I didn't read through both pages, so i apologize if someone already said this!.. If you register for a 'honeymoon' via honeyfund, you actually get cash!
For example you can register for 'romantic dinner for two valued at $100' and your grandma would get the satisfaction of thinking she bought you a romantic dinner, but in reality honeyfund just adds $100 to your account, and you can use the money for whatever the heck you want!
I have a friend who was able to pay off her whole wedding this way!

Def dont formally tell ppl that...you can have your mom sort of mention it to family who ask. I think you need to do a registry as well though for those ppl who 1. prefer to give a gift or 2. dont have the $ to give a lump sum but want to get you something! JMO

Re: Is it tacky....
I know this has been answered by a lot of girls but I think asking for $$ for anything wedding related is tacky.
Yes, FH & I always give $$ for weddings but no one ever out and out asked. I honestly would probably give less if someone said they wanted money.
This is just my honest opinion. I'm not even a fan of the honeymoon registry (that is for myself, I would probably buy someone stuff off of theirs though)
You should definately register for some things otherwise you will get a lot of things you may not want.
