...not register before my e-party? My FH and I don't live together and will be registering before the bridal shower and other events, but my mother suggested not registering before the party (1/28/07) so we don't get gifts and so we can try to get more money to use towards the wedding. We already received two gifts - both of which were NOT money nor were they things we would EVER use. I'm not trying to be rude at all or anything, but neither of us has the room to store anything until we get our own place (we both live with our parents). So, should we just register and get gifts we will at least want - or not, and gamble the game of bad gifts vs. good gifts vs. money?
Please dont come down hard on me - I am honestly looking for an honest reply.
Thank you!

I do not think you need to register. I think that at least 80% of your people, if not more, will give money if you have an engagement party. If you do not have a party, some people might just give you a gift within the next couple of months. We did not have an engagement party and this is what happened to us. I got gifts I loved though (maybe 3 or 4 that I did not care for but it was still ok). If you do register, then I would do what the other girls said and just not put the card in the invitation.

Supposedly, guests are not required to give a gift at all at an e-party. I'm suprised how many of you got gifts/$$.... many of my GF didn't get either at theirs. We didn't have one, so I can't say for certain.
That being said, no, I don't think its tacky BUT I wouldn't neccesarily expect gifts or money from everyone who attends.
Generally, when someone gets engaged you send a gift. Since a lot of people have engagement parties and showers, many people will just wait until those events to give the girft.
OK, now I am remembering. For my engagement party I received half and half. I registered at Fortunoff's, so about half the people went that route, the other wrote checks. Some people who did not use my registry actually bought me gorgeous crystal, so you never know

You don't have to register - especially if you have no room for storage. We registered for our's last January because a few of my great aunts were asking about my china pattern and such. Also, we had an apartment to store them in until our wedding. It's totally up to you and your FH.

People who give gifts, will give them if there's a registry or not, same with people who give money. I would register just so you get things that you would want once you llive together or at least register to a place that returns cash
