Is it tacky to help plan your own shower?

Original post by CloudNine

my parents are recently seperated and i was talking to my mom about a shower and she was getting a little nervous about paying for it. i told her to have it at the house if she wanted, i dont care. then she asked if i would want to help her plan it or if i would rather it be a surprise.

i dont really care either way but do you thin kits tacky to plan your own?

I helped plan mine, and wouldn't have it any other way. A lot of times the brides find out about the showers, and it isn't a surprise anymore.

I say help your mom, and have fun planning the shower!

I don't think it would be tacky at all, but i know that if I was helping plan my own bridal shower - I'd still want somebody else to send out the invites. I wouldn't wanna look as tho I'm throwing a party for MYSELF.

Do you have a Bridal Party? Cause they could always help your mom too, if you don't wanna have TOO much input. But it's fine either way, in my opinion.

I've had friends who've been surprised and others who helped plan it. I think you do whatever is right for you and your family.

ITA . It it will make it easier for your mom cost wise, you are better off helping her. Mine was a semi surprise , my mom needed my help with certain things, I just did not know when or where

I think outside of the Northeast, it is pretty common for a bride to help plan her shower. Here, it's supposed to be some big grand surprise for some reason.

I think you should do what you are comfortable with. Granted, it might be tacky for you to send out your own invite saying 'come give me presents', but if they are sent from your mom no one has to know you were involved.

I planned my own. I didn't have bridesmaids and I don't have any sisters. My mom was overwhelmed so I stepped in. I choose the invitations, the place, the menu and the guestlist.

I dont think it's tacky. I might be in this situation myself . As someone else previously mentioned, I would not want to pay for the shower or have much say in it, simply b.c then it's added stress. BUt then again, everyone's situation is different and sometimes we have no choice.

The planner in charge shouldn't be you, or even your relatives according to etiquette sources. The point is to avoid you planning a party enriching yourself. Your relatives are an extension of enriching the self.

Of course, as a party honoring you, the planners may want to consult you. And to keep relations smooth, get the input of relatives. But the invitation should not come from you or relatives.

thats pretty old-school etiquette now IMO

Yeah sounds silly to me. I had a lot of input with my own bridal shower and knew about it. I dont think its tacky and if people do then they can eff themselves.

I'm with you guys on this. I am helping my mother plan and I know she wouldn't have the time to do it by herself.
