Is St. Lucia Safe?

Is St. Lucia Safe?

Just got off the phone with my friend who told me that we 'are stupid' if we go to St. Lucia on our hm. She said she went there for a day on a cruise and almost got mugged. She said it's very poor and not very nice I have heard so many nice things about it - does anyone feel the same way???

we were so closed to booking it there, but now I am worried.

I need some honest opinions - TIA

many islands that have huge resorts on them can be in poorer areas once you leave... I have never heard St lucia is not safe though... FH and I are going to Jamaica and we always here it isn't 'safe'... but you are on a resort where MANY people vacation so I am sure you have nothing to worry about...

thats how I feel and she was there on a cruise. so she was prob in a very tourist area. I just need some re-insurance thats all. The resort we are looking at looks absolutly beautiful. I would be so annoyed if we had to start the hm search all over again.

I've never heard that particularly about St. Lucia, but I think the majority of the Caribbean islands are very poor on the surrounding areas of the resorts.

My FH and I just booked St. Lucia for our honeymoon. My friends sister went there 2 yrs ago and loved it. She even traveled out of the Sandals resort to the rain forests. I was talking to my travel agent about it and she did say it was a very poor area and of course there are places that you should not go to but over all it offers things outside the resorts that other islands don't.
I would book it. The resort will always be safe and if you want to travel outside of the resort just ask where they recommend you go.

Jen,

Our travel agent advised us against St. Lucia. That's where we originally booked. She said it is one the more unsafe islands yet all of them are really not as safe as here. I also know someone that did do the jeep tour through the rainforest and the jeep was mugged. And there are also a lot of people that went there and everything went fine.

We also switched islands because of other reasons.

Re: Is St. Lucia Safe?

We just honeymooned there in July and I never felt unsafe there. We stayed at the Sandals Regency, went on the volcano, rainforest & waterfall tours and went into the fishing town for a seafood festival.

Yes, it is a poor country but they are very friendly people. I had a great time and wouldn't hesitate to return. Good luck in your decision!

Where the cruise ships come in, there is a market. I honestly wouldn't go there. That is probably where your friend was. I have to say we were there for our HM and loved it!! I never ever felt unsafe. We left to go snorkeling and we were fine. The only unsafe feeling I had, had to do with some of the drivers driving around the bends of the mountains, but as far as being mugged, nope not at all. St. Lucia is amazing and a lot of the Newlyweds that went there loved it. The nice thing with Sandals is that there are 3 Sandals on the island, if you are getting bored, you can go to the other Sandals for the day!

Good luck with your decision.

The general rule of thumb is that the resort areas are well patrolled and safe and the further away you venture, the more at risk you are.

You have just as much a chance of being mugged or pickpocketed in Rome.

We went there for our HM and also stayed at Sandals...and I have to agree, the only time I felt unsafe was when we were on those little buses because the way they drive will turn your hair white. Other than that, I never felt unsafe, but we also never went wandering outside of the resorts.

we are going to St. Lucia (Sandals) for our honeymoon. I think that if you stay at the resort, it will be fine.

We are going for 1 day on a cruise.
I forget the detailsof the excursion we booked, but I believe we are beoign driven in a truck/bus or soemthing to the volcano. It doesn't errupt, it is sort of simmering all the time.

I think if you go with a group & a guide, it will be fine.

Sandals St. Lucia was wonderful. I've been back 4 times. St. Lucia and the Piton Mts were fab. We took a helicopter ride over the peaks and I thought it was green and lush. You are going to hear good and bad about everything.

I have a guide book to St. Lucia that recommends being careful where you go, especially in towns but not anymore so than you would in NYC.

There was a special caution that St. Lucian men aggressivlely approach single women, but none of us should have to worry about that.

I'm glad someone mentioned the mugging on the rain forest tour, I think maybe I'll leave my jewelery in the safe when we leave the resort.

Otherwise the guidebook I have is pretty recent and I don't anticipate a problem.

Take a look at tripadvisor.com for more specific info on the area you are staying in. We're staying at the Jalousie Hilton in Soufriere not at a Sandals.

i think with any of the islands you need to just stay in the resort! i have heard nothing but great things about the sandals resorts there- so i think you should just stay in the resorts to play it safe b/c this is the way it ison all the islands!

My cousin went to Jamaica and she said the same thing. When she was at her hotel it was great, she loved it. And as she said 'Once they let them out into the public it was scarey. But she loved it there, she had all inclusive. I wouldn't worry about it.
