In my opinion there is nothing wrong with Levittown...I was born & raised there...It has always had a bad wrap even when you speak to real estate reps....They say there is the good & the bad sections!

We just bought a house in levittown, and the neighborhood looks very nice and well-kept. My friend teaches there too, and says the schools are good - some are better than others, though, from what she said.

My Aunt has lived in Levittown for 50 some years... She's got a nice house, great neighboors and good size yard. The only thing I would change is throw in more basements!

We looked at a few houses in Levittown, and heard weird things too...the taxes are WAY high, with no basement on most, and someone told me that their is a higher rate of cancer b/c of the soil there - used to be potato crops or something (I don't know for sure if there is any data supporting that).
Anyway, concerning schools, Macarthur is supposed to be great and Island Trees good too.

I work in Levittown. It's the best. I would move there, but I don't want to live in the same neighborhood as the students. Move into the MacArthur HS part of the district. That's my school! Go generals!

We originally looked into Levittown but most of the houses didn't have basements and we hate capes

I grew up in Levittown and never had a basement, so I don't miss it! Ironically, my house in Putnam has only a crawl basement.
Levittown was a great place to grow up. There were always lot of things for kids (Little League, scouting, the Saturday dance program, the pools in the summer) and I had a great childhood there. I went to MacArthur and always enjoyed school.
We thought about moving back but it didn't really fit in with our job locations.
Some of the houses now have been expanded to the point where I can't see how you'd need a basement- some of them have to be close to 1800-2000 square feet. That would be plenty of space, but that's just my opinion.

We bought a house in Levittown in the Island Trees School District and I love it there. We have easy access to everything and the area is really nice.
My DH grew up around the corner and he graduated from Island Trees, its a good school district.
ETS: We don't have a basement, but we have the eaves open for storage space. We have an extended cape which includes a formal dining room. It's plenty of space for 2 or even 3 people.

I think you should research the history of levittown and how it came to be, who created it, and who was and was not allowed to live there. That is probably why some make faces when you say Levittown....
