I suggest you take a swatch of the fabric and put it in black dye (like RIT, available at any supermarket) for a short period of time, that should darken the color. If it works with the swatch the dress should be fine.

I don't think I would try to do it on my own. I know there are people who actually dye clothing but there is too much of a chance of ruining it by doing it yourself.
The color may not catch evenly and have a wavey effect.

Re: Is there any way to make a red dress darker? stain it?

I don't think tea will do the trick it is too light tea will just tint it. What kinda fabric is it??? I think cotton or linen would dye best. It may also change the texture of the fabric changing the way it hangs. I have dyed t shirts in the past with the rit dye and it never comes out the color that the package is pumpkin orange would come out more coral, or red would come out orange.

I am just wondering if the fabric was treated with anything even a starch will effect the way fabric takes the dye. Seams, pleats, hems may get darker than the rest of the dress too.

If it was just plain fabric it would be one thing to dye it.
