Is this an normal price for a photographer?

Original post by eliz808

4000 for bride and groom extra $500 for each parents album, you get to keep the negatives an additional 2600 for videography? This is for 8 hours anut (700 shots?)

I guess the total for photo & video would be $8000 apprx

I think that the price you have quoted is typical of the upscale photographers on Long Island. I paid in the range you are looking, and still believe it was worth every penny -- I love my pictures and they are all over my home...

It sounds like Jovon too and we are using them. I know it's alot but their photos are beautiful! We are paying that much though because we are getting so much- we added tons of extras including a 2nd photographer. I am SURE you can find just as nice work out there for cheaper but we loved Jovon's style and the photographer so we did it.

I am using Mark Kaufman, and we went all out....once all is said and done, our photos will come to about $8,000 or $9,000.

Like some of the girls said, there is no 'normal' price, it depends what you want.

I think that is way too much to pay for pictures. No offense - but comparing pictures to steak from steakhouses is liking comparing apples to oranges. Pictures are pictures and most of the bridal places follow the same theme when doing the video.
I payed less than $2000 for my photographer and $1200 for my videographer. The video came out awesome as well as my pictures.
With my photographer I got 50 pictures in my album, 2 parents albums with 30 pictures each, my thank you pictures, plus a bunch of extra wallets, 8x10s, 5x7s, a poster size picture, etc.
I know some people are into photojournalism which costs a bit more. I do not care for photojournalism so I did not get one, but my vendor could have gotten one for me for an additional charge that still would not add up to what some of these other photographers are costing.
Sorry ladies, but in my opinion paying $8,000 for just the photographer and videographer when there are so many other awesome, cheaper vendors out there is just plain crazy and a waste of money.

So whatcha saying is....a steak from applebee's is the same as a steak from Morton's Steak House?

There is a difference....there's always a difference in everything...from clothes to steaks to video to cars to neighborhoods to shoes.

There is a difference.

But one cannot critque without knowing what there is to compare too

I should have included the photographers it's Joel Greenberg and wendy Stewart. I guess that's why its so high. I love their photos but since I'm new to the whole photo thing I wanted to pass it by the brides who are in the know. I have a long way to go before booking this one.

Sounds ok to me. Mine is $8000 just for the photos. I am using Creative Compositions.

For Greenbergs and Stewarts pics, that is an awesome quote.

I agree that there is no 'normal' price. I am paying about $7000 for my video and photography. My fiance almost had heart failure after that day. I decided to go with a higher package, add b&w photojournalism. It all depends. You should research your future photographer and videographer and see their work. My sister got married and although her pictures were ok, they werent anything spectacular. I spent more b/c this I felt will be something I will have forever. But to each is own. Just make sure you see the work and shop around for the best price for you.

No, I am not saying that a steakhouse from AbbleBee's is the same as Morton's.
I am saying that photographs are photographs. Yes, the equipment, film, and the photographer themselves are essential in getting good photographs but I do not see how spending thousands of dollars more on a photographer gets you better pictures.

A friend of mine got married around the same time as me and she paid an arm and a leg for her photographer (not sure of the name of the vendor she used). Anyway, not only did she pay more than me -she also got less in terms of product for her money.
She only got 30 pictures in her bridal album (I get 50 in mine), her parents albums only got 15 pictures (my parents albums get 30 each), she had to pay extra for the Thank you photos and she didn't get extra pictures with her package (we got 125 thank you pictures plus a dozen extra pictures in various sizes). The thing that got me is that we both saw each other's proofs and the quality, and quantity, etc of the pictures were identical. The same types of pictures were taken (neither of us did photojournalism) The only difference is she paid a lot more money for something she could've gotten for a lot cheaper. I guess the point I am trying to make is that just because its more expensive doesn't mean it's worth it or that your pictures will be better. Like I said before, pictures are pictures- in alot of situations the quality/ quantity/service is identical whether you are paying $8,000 or less than $2,000. It's just a matter ofwhether or not you mind wasting your money or not.
