is your engagement ring white gold??

Original post by the future mrs m

just wondering. fh is about to purchase my ring and it seems that all the vendors we speak to are trying to convince me to get white gold when ive always had my heart set on patinium. i just wonder can you see the difference b/w white gold and platinium after a while?

I have white gold and I am fine with that! FH and I thought it made more sense to save money on the metal used and spend more on the quality of the rock!

My ring is 'turning' because its white gold, but our jewler (been with him for years) was actully the one who told us he would prefer not to sell us a more expensive version of my ring in platinum because it scratched very easily and constantly had to be polished. He said white gold was more durable in that sense and that as long as we polished it regularly, it would be fine. He does need to work with it to make it look like my bands, but after that, as long as they 'tarnish' at the same rate i am good.

mine is white gold..and i originally wanted platinum..but he thought it was a waste and put more money towards the quality of the diamond..i think thats actually smarter now that i think about it

It depends on your budget and your setting. For me, the difference in price for my setting was less than $300 -- not substantial enough to change the quality of my diamond.

My ring is white gold...My sister has platinum and it is very sensitive...it has so many scratches and the platinum bends easily.

I would vote for white gold.

I think this is all a preference.

I have a platinum ring, which FH picked out himself. He did a lot of research and ended up getting it, because he felt that in time it would hold up better. I'm fairly rough with my hands and although there are a few scratches, it has never bent and once it's polished and buffed it looks completely brand new.

This is my second marriage so I have had BOTH! LOL. My first eRing was platinum....... I loved it, however, Over time the prongs kept bending. I had to have them straightened twice. It did get quite scratched up also. This time I have 18K and no problems yet. My sil has platinum and her prongs came lose and her diamond fell out. And a friend of mine has white gold (her ring is 5 months old) and its getting yellowish already. I dont know..... There pros and negs to both.

White gold will take on a yellowish color in time.
Platinum doesn't , but costs quite a bit more.

FH bout my ring in white gold. I would have preferred platinum.

My jeweler encouraged white gold for my particular setting. She said that she finds that white gold holds pave stone better than platinum....and my setting has pave stones.

Its all personal preferenc.

Both my e-ring and w-ring are platinum. I have been wearing the e-ring for 2 and a half years and the w-ring for a year and neither one are very scratched. Of course there are signs of normal every-day wear, but when I clean them they look great.
I had to get pt. because I have an allergy to gold. I do love that pt does not need to be 'redipped' and will develop a patina over time.

My ring is white gold and I absolutely love it!!!! My friend's engagement ring is platinum but her wedding band is white gold. You cant even tell the difference. However, i heard that platinum scratches easier than white gold. I love my ring

Ok, so here's the low down with Platinum....if you plan on having a job where you are rough with your hands or you are prone to banging your ring on things or if you're a tapper with your ring (tap it against surface to make noise) then DO NOT do platinum. The metal is softer than white gold and will scratch and damage easier. My mom had a platinum e-ring and she certainly did a number to it. Yes white gold may lose its luster but so does silver and most other metals, that's just the way it is especially when it comes to the metal reacting with your skin and the general environment.

Long story short, I think white gold will hold up longer and it isn't as easy to damage.

I have to differ, I bartend and I wear my ring and it does scratch but nothing major, when I take it to the jeweler it gets polished out and I don't have any problems with it 'bending'.
