just wondering. fh is about to purchase my ring and it seems that all the vendors we speak to are trying to convince me to get white gold when ive always had my heart set on patinium. i just wonder can you see the difference b/w white gold and platinium after a while?

Re: is your engagement ring white gold??
Mine is white gold. I have a lot of WG jewelry and though some older pieces look like they have to get dipped, most look just fine. I was told that 18K will yellow faster than 14K because it's purer, and has more yellow gold in it, as opposed to 14K. Don't hold me to that, it's just what they told me when I asked.

Re: is your engagement ring white gold??
I, too, wanted platinum and the jeweler actually talked us into white gold. I forget now what the reasons were so that's no help, but to answer your question, mine is white gold.
I have white gold- I personally preferred it because we weighed the pros and cons of each and due to me being paranoid about scratching it and price and hlding the diamons, I chose white gold. My sister has platinum and she preferred that. You cant tell the difference when looking at them- i think it depends what you prefer.

Re: is your engagement ring white gold??
I have a platinum e-ring and plain wedding band.
Platinum never loses its color - it does lose its shine but never its color. White gold does. I wear my moms white gold band on my right hand and after having been dipped it looks yellowish already.
You do not dip platinum - you shine or buff it.
ETA: DH's wedding band was platinum like mine. He tried on some white gold bands to replace the one he lost (don't ask) and he did not like the weight of it. He felt the platinum was heavier. He is buying platinum now. In the mean time, he is wearing the silver replica that was tied to our RB's pillow so if he ran off, we wouldnt be out too much money.

My e ring is white gold...I wanted white gold. I am not too sure of the diferences. My best friends is platinum and I know she is always complaining it gets scratched and dented. I have never had any trouble with mine except I changed my prongs from 4 to 6 but that had nothing to do with the white gold. Good Luck. The jeweler should be able to give you some good advice.

I have platinum and I love it. I however am not that rough with my hands. Of course my ring has a scratch or two, but no matter what you are going to have a scratch. I like that fact that platinum ages antique looking, but as someone mentioned, you can always have it buffed and it looks brand new!
Good luck with whatever you choose! Either will be beautiful!

no you don't dip platinum... it defeats the purpose of getting platinum!
FH got my ring from bluenile... he said the transaction was very fluid... he knew exactly what he was getting, since the stone was GIA certified and all...
Platinum is definitely the way to go if you tend to be rough on your jewelry. The prongs are also stronger, so the stone may not loosen quite as easily. It is more $$$ initially, but after dipping gold 5 or 6 times over the years, I bet the cost difference is minimal

my e-ring is white gold. I've had it for a year and a half and I'm starting to notice some scratches and slight yellowing, so I am planning to get it dipped before the wedding. I think I will get a white gold band as well.

At the same time, it's actually stronger and holds the stones better. It really doesn't scratch, but does sort of 'age' into a patina. It can be repolished to its original shine.
One isn't better than the other - it's a matter of personal preference really!

Re: is your engagement ring white gold??
I have Platinum. I found this for you.
Platinum jewelry is the perfect choice for a more durable than other jewelry metals. Platinum does not wear away and holds precious stones firmly and securely. Like all precious metals, platinum scratches. However, the scratch on a platinum piece is merely a displacement of the metal and none of its volume is lost. So, even though wearing it each and every day may leave an impression on the surface, it remains what it was - a symbol for all things eternal.
In addition to its strength and density, platinum has another remarkable quality - pliability. Platinum is so pliable, that just one gram of the metal can be drawn to produce a fine wire over one mile (almost 2 km) long. This quality has enabled jewelers to create some amazing versatile platinum mesh accessories, which could not be fashioned from other precious metals.

Re: is your engagement ring white gold??
This is what I remember from researching:
Platinum is a softer metal so it will scratch easier but it's color stays truer over the years
White gold is a more hearty metal so it resists scratching more but will turn a bit yellowish over time.
I went with white gold - it is cheaper to have it dipped years from now then to have to get a platinum band replaced because it is all scratched up.

Re: is your engagement ring white gold??
I don't remember who said it but not all white gold rings need to be dipped, I know mine doesn't. My FH did his research and asked me what i preferred. I personally didn't want something too heavy. But platinum always looks so dull to me, even after it has been shined up it does not have the same luster as gold - so I knew I wanted white gold. It does really come down to preference because no one is ever going to know the difference unless you tell them!
