just wondering. fh is about to purchase my ring and it seems that all the vendors we speak to are trying to convince me to get white gold when ive always had my heart set on patinium. i just wonder can you see the difference b/w white gold and platinium after a while?

Mine is white gold. I've had it for a year and a half already and haven't had to get it redipped yet. It does have some scratches but only if you look at it real close.

I had the same dilema when picking out my ring. I asked every jewler we went to about it. What I found was that you can get real white gold that doesn't have to be dipped, so if your jewler tells you that it has to be redipped it's because they are giving you a yellow gold ring and dipping it. But white gold can be made. What one jewler told me was that platinum is stronger and if you get a prong caught on a sweater it would just bend, the white gold prong may break, but he also said that there aren't loose diamonds laying all over the street.

Sorry this was so long, but it was a tough decision for me too. I went with platinum. It was only about $400 or $500 more and my fiance and I figured what's $400-$500 when you're spending thousands plus I will wear it forever.

that must be what I have because I have had my ring for a year and 6 months and havent had to get it redipped- I do however get it cleaned by the jeweler so it's nice and sparkly

There are pros and cons to both white gold and platinum, as mentioned above. Regardless of which you choose, you should make sure your prongs are platinum, but I believe most are anyway.

My rings are white gold. I have to have my rings re-dipped once a year or else they start to look yellow gold. I also have a platinum ring that I have worn pretty much everyday for 8 years, and have only had to have it re-dipped 2 times.
White gold costs me $40 to redip,
Platinum costs me $80.
I personally prefer white gold just because when new I think that white gold looks a little bit cleaner against diamonds.

i'm confused. so, do you have to re-dip platinum bands? I didn't think you did. so, then how do you get the scratches out of the platinum band?

When platinum is scratched, it will actually separate and make room for the scratch without loss of metal. Over time, platinum develops an 'antique' look that a lot of girls like but you can always have it polished to look shiny again.

mine is platinum...i don't think it really matters, worse comes to worse you get it redipped. Don't think that is too expensive.

Ok, so here's the low down with Platinum....if you plan on having a job where you are rough with your hands or you are prone to banging your ring on things or if you're a tapper with your ring (tap it against surface to make noise) then DO NOT do platinum. The metal is softer than white gold and will scratch and damage easier. My mom had a platinum e-ring and she certainly did a number to it. Yes white gold may lose its luster but so does silver and most other metals, that's just the way it is especially when it comes to the metal reacting with your skin and the general environment.

Long story short, I think white gold will hold up longer and it isn't as easy to damage.

I have platinum, I was told it scratches more then white gold,but when polished scratches come out and it doesn't lose medal when scratched like white gold

Mine is white gold too....I just got it two weeks ago and after the jewler resized it he told me i needed to get it dipped but he's all the way in Jersey and only has that machine on the weekdays....

From what I'm reading with respect to the difference, I say you go with your budget. Hey, if you can spend less money on the band, you can spend more money on getting a better color diamond or bigger stone.

mine is white gold.

I think it depends on the ring and hoe it is made, i dont think they all turn yellowish

however, platnium is softer and wears quicker. it also scrathes easier as well.

Both are nice, I personally dont think there is much difference between the 2, white gold is less expensive though

My ring is white gold, even though it may need to be redipped you can see the scratches on a platinum band. I have my grandmothers wedding band and its 60 years old. It hasnt been redipped yet and still looks great. I'm redipping it before the wedding.
