My Mother is not Italian, but my father is...And all the weddings I've ever been involved in were on my Mom's side...
Now...My fiance and both parents are Italian...
In their family, the person who throws the bridal shower gives out statues to the bridesmaids (I've seen Giorgio Armani ones mainly.)
I mentioned this to my Mom (who is throwing my shower)...And she's considering doing it now too...
Has anyone heard of this? Is this generally an Italian tradition? Can she give something else to the bridesmaids? Does she even really have to???
She wants everything to be right for all involved, but I don't want her to get too stressed...
Thanks for reading...And any input would be greatly appreciated...

We must be lapsed Italians .. LOL
though I'm generally have a big Greek wedding, so this could possibly be why it hasn't been brought up to me. Though any shower in either side of my family this wasn't done. Then again, practially everyone in my family hasn't married an Italian, so the traditions weren't really enforced , necessarily
sorry Kelly .. I know I'm not helping your problem here! i'll stay out of it

All of the showers I've been to have had the statues which I personally don't like. I mean it's one thing for the bride but to give the bridal party - most don't want them. I'd give mine to my mom. But in all fairness the gesture is nice. I see most popular are the Armani statues as well as Lladro. These things get so expensive and I can't help but think it's not a big deal to skip it. I'm sure my FMIL would gasp in horror to hear me say that but honestly I think that unless you absolutely want it then you can and should skip it. My bridesmaids aren't Italian and definitely wouldn't understand the point.
I agree...My FMIL is Italian...I just don't know what to tell my Mom to do...Siiiiiiiighhhhh!!!
And um...with the 18 million bridesmaids that I have...Well...my mom having to give them gifts would really get expensive for her...Especially gifts like that.
Let your mom do whatever she originally planned on doing. People will talk no matter what. As long as you and FH are happy, that's what counts. Don't let this stress you. If your FMIL brings it up, just tell her it is not your family's tradition.

If you could find something from Mikasa that might be a great compromise. Not as ridiculously expensive as Armani yet still meeting everyone'e expectations. Lenox might be more reasonable too.
You're mom could always talk to your FMIL about it. One thing I have to say - Italians can tell you where to get the best deal when it comes to these things. Remember that if they do speak your mom should ask her if she has done this and what she recommends - not should she do it. The answer will be 'whatever you want' which isn't really helpful.

Agreed. I wrote on the first page my mom who was born in Northern Italy never heard of it. But we have gone to showers we have seen it. My FMIL is from Southern Italy and she totally knew of it.

that makes sense, but. . my family is from Southern italy. .
my grandma has probably heard of it, I should ask-it probabaly just dropped off the more Americanized the family became.

I've heard of it. My shower was 2 weeks ago and my mom gave the bm's Armani statues -- and when my sis got married 10 years ago, she did the same thing.
I'm not sure if its a southern italian tradition or just an italian one in general -- my family is from northern italy and its popular there.

Re: Italian brides or anyone who can help...
In the past when my sisters or cousins got married every bridesmaid had a doll in front of them, but recently at the 4 bridal showers i have been to on my FH's side, they received something else or nothing at all. My FH and his family are way more italalian than my family and i guess it is not a tradition as much as it was in the past. right now i have about 5 statues from being in bridal parties, my mom still wants to do it for me but i guess the times are achangin'. do what you want , i am going to do what i want either way dont stress to much over it, it is your shower!!!!
Can she do Precious Moments or something: 'Cute' instead of gaud?
I guess that could be a good option...but again, I am not even sure the BM would appreciate them if they weren't a fan of precious moments, or any other knick-knack for that matter.
Regarding favors, yes, favors are big in an Italian wedding...the most recent wedding I went to had imported murano crystal napkin holders as the favor...so much for a bottle opener or something!!
You girls are freaking me out. My FI is 100% Italian and not only am I nothing of the sort, but I'm from San Diego, not even New York. So not only am I trying to adjust to and pay for these lavish NY weddings, but now I'm freaking out about favors and other traditions. Yikes!

Don't freak out! Believe it or not, most of us who might even be Italian still have to adjust because it is now 'our' own wedding, a not cousin ROSAMARIA'S or whatever. It is expensive, but what else can we do! The important thing to remember is weddings are all about the couple, and creativity is certainly important...so for example, if anyone questions why I am not having these stupid dolls and maybe have something else in it's place that represents FH and I, that is my excuse!

Right there with ya! No matter what traditions may be out there in the end you do what makes you happy. Personally, my opinion is that if you didn't know of the tradition to begin with there is no sentiment in doing it. Yes, be proud that you're Italian but honor that in your own way. My family is from Naples and they don't do this. FH's family is from Sicily and they do. So if they want to get the statues fine - I appreciate the gesture but I'm not requesting them and not expecting them.

Re: Italian brides or anyone who can help...
Honestly...both of my parents are from Italy and while yes, many Italian mothers do this for their daughters BM's etc...My sister who was married last year made sure this was NOT done at hers which everyone agreed was fine due to the fact that we do not like Armani statues so instead for my sister's shower we gave everone a swarvoski butterfly which the BM's loved and they were glad they did not get another Armani statue......

Re: Italian brides or anyone who can help...
I lived in italy for 7 and a half years and ive seen the bride get one from her mom but never the bridesmaids, at least i never got one from all the weddings i did a testimonial in....they dont even have showers there so I think it is an Italian 'americanized' tradition...do what makes ytou happy..if i was do do everything my italian parents want me to do they would be broke!!

my whole family is from northern italy (my parents are off the boat) and no one has ever heard of this tradition... i personally am not going to give out anything like that because i know that i always end up sticking that stuff in the back of my closet until the next spring cleaning... jmo.

Re: Italian brides or anyone who can help...
Ok i'm not helping here - but this tradition would mean that the BM's get not only a gift from the bride but from the brides mother too???? Are they getting a gift from the mother of the bride because they paid for the shower? or is that not part of the tradition?
i'm of italian decent and never heard of this - which isnt to say that means anything. future in-laws are off the boat - and i'm not asking because i would rather play dumb!!!!
