Ive been a victim of a scam...kind of long

Original post by Saviry2000

Ok here's my story, a couple of weeks ago I receive a mail indicating that I have won a sweepstake( 3rd prize winning of $120,000 thousand dollars). I immediately called FH and told him about, he implied that we will talk about it later since he's at work, ok fine. Like he said we talk about it when he came home and I decided not to look into it, but he insist that I call; so the next day I did, I spoke to this lady and she confirm that I have won $120,000( WHAT $120,000) ok that's freaking awesome, so I started asking her questions and all her answers were satifactory to me. Ok here's the catch, they sent me a check for $1,997 and asked me to cash it then send it via moneygram back to them to cover taxes and fees so I did (stupid I know) but i was sold, she made it sound so real, I think im not the only idiot that was taken away by this offer.

So today I went online to my account and realize that my account was missing $1,997 after I have taken out $1,997 a couple of days ago to send out too them. OK WHAT THE HELL. I imediatelly called my bank and they told me that the check i have deposit was cleared but returned back to me, OK, AGAIN WHAT THE HELL, how can a bank clear a check without validating the check first, this *** on the phone indicated that the bank is only allow to hold a check for a length of time before they release the funds without validating the check, after hearing that I really felt like an IDIOT.

So to make a long story short, Im crying my eyes out because I have been taken for a ride I just lost $2,000 and I want it back. What hurts me the most I really didn't believe that they are people out there that would do this to me and WHY ME? to make it worst my mom calls me while im crying and ask me why im crying and I cant even that her anything because she will be like 'ARE YOU THAT STUPID, you don't have anything better to do with $2000 then to give it away' mind you I still have alot of vendors to payoff.

The bad thing is Im still crying I CANT BELIEVE.
sry, long but I had to share, please lady's be aware, don't be a greed like I was.

That is really horrible and I'm sorry you went through it but thank you for posting your story to warn others, that sounds like something I could easily fall for. Espcially being a bride to be and needing money for everything!

Id say call the police and then go to a TV station and se if they could do a report on this on like 'Help me Howard' on the CW11 or something. You definitly need to get your $$$ back!! Good luck!

OMG don't feel bad. I got a restricted call on my cell and the person said that i won a 1,000 dollar internet shopping spree. I'd really love to believe it but right now i can't afford for it to be a scam. I won't pursue it.

Alot of girls on BHB said that this scam was actually on dateline a few days ago.

Hmmmm its hard then bc obviously its not some small scam that they did recently and run off with the money...Obviously they've done it to alot of people and even dateline has reported about it.

The more people that do report this the better it will be.

I would say the cops can trace a number but they can just have a number set up somewhere where it wont connect the cops to them...Also they probably have off-shore accounts where the money goes to...did the bank tell you where the money was deposited? I mean it is going somewhere so it might be traceable but depending on how careful these people were.

I remember when i worked for a private investigators office years ago they were able to find peoples off shore accounts

That same exact thing happened to my MOH about 6 months ago. Its called a Nigerian scam and I saw a show on it on 20/20. People in Nigeria are scaming people just like the way they did you.

My friend just got a letter like that and deposited the check....she was supposed to denf in only $50 though of the 1350.00 check she received. I found out about it before she sent them the money though.....so I stopped her from sending them the money. Sorry that happened to you, but don't feel so stupid.....it happens to HUNDREDS of people every month. I work at a bank and get notices about this all the time. It ***** too because these people are really hard to catch.

Oh my god, I cant believe someone actually fell for that one?

I thought this was a joke at first! Sometimes someone needs to learn a lesson like this to better themselves in the future.

Lesson learned? Welcome to the real world.

this happened to someone i know. don't feel stupid, you are getting married and broke. this is a popular scam .... b/c a lot of people fall for it. the police told the person i know (who was scammed) that its a crime ring that operates out of nigeria.

i did something really stupid over the summer....i left my pocketbook with my laptop and a bank check, phone, $400 book etc., for literally 10 minutes in an empty classroom and it was stolen. i was studying for the bar and i hadn't eaten in 16 hours and my bag was super heavy...i ran out to get food and it was gone. i had to buy a 1700 laptop the very next day (on credit of course), b/c i had to keep studying and retype my outlines. not only had i lost $$, but i lost all of my work too! you do these things when you are under stress.....i am also prob much older than you and should have known better!!

the way you have to think of it is -- you could have been in a car accident...your FH or family could have been in a car accident - you could be sick...you could have wired them 10K.....honestly you will recoup the 2k somehow and you learned a valuable lesson. this is not to diminish your frustration but you have to think - its not your life, its only money.....
