Hi Ladies, Has anyone done the Japanes Hair Straightner? If so, what was your experience like? Does your hair tend to fall off? I would like to do this, but am scared because I have thin hair ..Any advice? Someone was kind enough to recommend a place on 23rd street? Any other good locations in Manhattan?
Thanks!

Re: JAPANES HAIR STRAIGTNER..ANYONE???
I got it done twice.. Its very expensive!! I liked it cause I literally didnt even have to brush my hair after the shower, but I hated it because my hair was PIN straight and had NO body. I couldnt do anything with it but wear it straight all the time and eventually that bothered me. It also kind of ruined my hair, just have to get lots of haircuts to keep it healthy.. but I guess it all depends on your hair type. My stylist now told me that they have some brazilian treatment that is better because it gives it more body and makes your hair healthier.. .. I dunno I might try it out after the wedding.. we will see.
Anyhow this is the place I went to in NY.. they are VERY good..

Agreed. I mean I never had the Japanese straighter done but I know people that have and all say it is to straight. My sister gets the Brazilian and loves it. It is not a straightner but a relaxer in the sense of getting ride of frizzy hair. She has such frizzy hair and now it is much better.

I've done the Japanese one 3 times now. It looks really straight and shiny for the first 3 months. Then the shine goes away (at least with me) and it's really straight. However, I must say that I've notice more and more split ends now.
But I feel addicted to it I don't have to spend hours drying my hair with blowdryer.

I like it a lot. I have thick hair though, so I am not sure what it does to thin hair. If you go to the place on 23rd street....Hayato, they will do a consultation first and let you know if they can do it on your hair. They will NOT do it if they think it won't come out well.

It is not a straightner. It takes the friz out and it washes out over time. My sister goes about every 4-5 months.

Yeah...I've heard a lot of great things about Hayato....I think I should just go for a consultation and get over my fear of losing hair

well, IMO both the japanese and brazilian hair straightener are really strong. I've known people who have done both. It changes the chemical composition of your hair and your hair is never again the same even when it grows out. People say that the brazilian hair treatment is safer than the japanese, but honestly in terms of health, both are bad. I know that the brazilian treatment contains a pretty big amount of formaldehyde that can be fatal, and actually a lady last year died after doing the treatment. And all those chemicals will affect your hair and your health, especially if you do it continuously.
All I'm saying is do lots of research online of its effects before you commit to doing it.

...OMG, someone actually died from this. That is so scary!!! I'm having second thoughts now...Hmmmm...I guess I will research this week before deciding to proceed with this. Thanks!

I had this done - I had it done at John Frieda - and I did a lot of research before shelling out.
It RUINED my hair. And I had NOT dyed my hair in 4 years prior to getting it done. While my hair was straight, the chemicals were SOOO drying, and my hair wasn't wash&go straight. It didn't frizz up as much, but my hair was so dull and lifeless.
I would never get it again. I would rather try to work with my curls than do so much damage again.

I was shocked when I heard/read about it too! Although I believe that the lady that did it, had it done more than once...but if a couple of times can kill you, then I'm sure doing it once isn't exactly the healthiest thing to do. And remember, these products are strong! and you're putting them right next to your scalp which is living and breathing and contains pores that do take things in....again just do your research

I have to agree that your hair is never the same afterwards. Mine is all grown out now but my hair is thin and very frail... and LOTS of split ends all the time... it def doesnt have the shine it used to either my mom swears im going to have gray course hair because of what i did!

Re: JAPANES HAIR STRAIGTNER..ANYONE???
I've done the Japanese probably 5 times now, and I recently tried the Brazilian Keratin treatment.
There is a HUGE difference btwn the 2 Brazilian treatments!!! The STRAIGHTENER is the one with the formaldehyde in it. The KERATIN one actually does NOT contain formaldehyde. Yeah, it's still strong, but it actually deposits a silk-type material on your hair.
I don't love the Keratin treatment. With the Japanese, my hair was still very shiny. I have really thick, kinky, coarse hair. While all of the frizz and most of the curl were gone, I still had to blow-dry and flat-iron it...but the process was much shorter. And, flat-ironing Japanese straightened hair is supposedly a big no-no!!!!
The Keratin has left my hair kind of dull and lifeless. I don't want to do the Japanese again before my wedding b/c I need my hair to hold curling-iron curls, and it won't at all with the Japanese.

I agree with not doing the Japanese straightening. Everyone i know who has gotten it, regret it.
My friend does the Brazilian on people all the time and reccommends it to everyone. Its much better for your hair! And helps the frizz a lot!!!

Re: JAPANES HAIR STRAIGTNER..ANYONE???
You ladies have been very helpful....Although I would love to wake up and have my hair straight without blow drying it, I decided not to take the risk with doing the brazilian or japanese straightner. I was suppose to go for a consultation this afternoon, but just cancelled. Thanks again

I had a co-worker who did the japanese hair straightner... it looked pin straight! but I think she ended up having some problems with it later on.

The Janapense one seems to be good. Be aware though that they are not 'treatments' they are processess. Meaning that they act like a relaxer would in your hair. Yes it may look healthier, but it is not making your hair actually healthier.

Re: JAPANES HAIR STRAIGTNER..ANYONE???
I've gotten it down twice so far...once a year..and LOVE IT!! This is the first year I am not getting it done b/c after my wedding i'm chopping it all off...so why waste all that money? lol
I do notce the split ends more now...but that's only b/c it's sooo straight! I just get a hair trim once a month.. It's sooo easy to maintain...and I'm still able to get things done to it... I blow dry the roots to get my voluem!
