I'm having an outdoor wedding and I want a really simple but elegant chuppah. I saw one on the net somewhere with 4 long branch like sticks and a sheer swag, then just flowers on the corners. I printed it, but forgot to save ..
See my album ceremony ideas for pictures of the standard one... I think its too much for an outdoor wedding.

A chuppah is a wedding canopy. You have to be married under one in a Jewish ceremony. This is the chuppah she is talking about:
I don't think it's too elaborate for an outdoor wedding, necessarily. I'd be worried about all that fabric flapping around in the wind, though, and being distracting! And if you're getting married in an elaborate setting (a garden with lots of flowers, etc.), you don't need something like this - a simple chuppah might look more romantic.
At least you're getting married in LI - I'm getting married in northern Connecticut, where there is apparently not one single chuppah for rent, and FH and I might have to go up a day early to MAKE one with supplies from Home Depot.

Re: Jewish Brides: Chuppah or Hupah
it's a wedding canopy that Jewish couples get married under. it symbolizes the couple's marital home.
this was ours. it was very simple- just a basic chuppah structure w/ a tallit and some flowers.
does anyone care to explain for the non-jewish girls ?
Sorry...
its just a small canopy you stand under during ceremony. It reperesents your new house.
They can get pretty interesting, but essentially its 4 sticks with a cloth over the top.
I think the more religious use the prayer cloth worn by the men, for the top. I want a sheer chiffon swag lol!

We had curly willow branches and flowers mounted to the poles of our chuppah. There's a pic in my album. (Am at work and can't post pics).

Found it! yay, it was just hiding in my mess of wedding idea picture files
I'd probably do even simpler flowers and just on the corners, I love the sheer fabric soooo much

I don't think it would be overdone for an outdoor wedding- DH and I had a simple one that we got from our florist- just something basic and not with the usual crown of flowers overhead.. just simple nosegays in the corners were what we did- there are more pics in my album under my non pro pics from my wedding.

You should try a temple in the area where you are getting married. They may lend you one.

I could be wrong, but I'd imagine that each Temple only has one ... and it might likely be in use at the time. Also, then you might have to pay someone to set it up for you. I guess it can't hurt to ask though?
Our hall has a basic structure for one, we just had our florist embellish it for us. Your best bet is really to speak with your florist, they are typically the ones who handle this sort of thing.

Not a problem at all I don't mind.
We only had a 30 minute ceremony at Russo's- not at a temple otherwise I would have been a bit more flowers on the chuppah I think but I love the way it was set up (also you had to step up to it like a platform) and everyone can see it and also the lighting and swagging of the fabric were perfect for DH and I.
I saw one at our florist that was set up looking like branches and was really cool looking -like it belonged in the middle of a forest or garden- it was quite big as well... it looked like entertwined branches forming a large 4 columns and then the cross posts... I wish I had a pic of it since it looked so nice - and the fabric wasn't even draped on it so you just saw the skeleton of it. It made me want to ask for that chuppa but I know it would have been more expensive.
