Jewish brides - saturday night wedding question

Jewish brides - saturday night wedding question

Do most rabbis stick to the official ending time of shabbat, or will most of them just marry you once the sun has set? I have no idea about this. I just thought we could have a 4;30 or 5pm ceremony because sunset is at 4:11 pm, but then shabbat doenst officialy end until 5:15...does anyone know?

It probably depends on the rabbi, but most of the ones I know would wait until after shabbos is completely over. Don't forget that the Rabbi needs to be able to first travel to the ceremony site after shabbos.

As far as I know, not only can you not have the ceremony until after Shabbos officially ends, but you may have to give the Rabbi (and anyone else who is Shomer Shabbos) time to get ready and get there!

Thus, the advantage to Sunday weddings :)

Depends on the rabbi - you may get one who will do the 5PM ceremony. But, there are some that won't even begin the travel to the ceremony spot until Shabbat ends, which could delay it to at least 6PM if not later.

I agree it depends on your rabbi-- if you have one that is more reform- I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Sunset on my weddding day is set for like 7:20something.. I am having a 7 30 ceremony- and the cantor will be there by 6 45 to do the bedeken and ketubah signing before the ceremony..

It definitely depends on the rabbi. We had a sunset ceremony and it wasn't a problem.

depends on the rabbi...ours is a reformed rabbi so he is more lax. He said that as long as sunset is over when he pronounces us husband and wife...then that is fine. He will be starting the ceremony before sunset ends.

good point...fyi--it's 'reform' not 'reformed'...i used to belong to a reform congregation and it got really confusing

Totally depends on the Rabbi....we are not overly religious at all....we got married on a Saturday morning at 11:30 :)

Most rabbis have to wait until Shabbat is over- and they do have to travel there.

I'm not Jewish, but my boss was just telling me the story of his wedding. They had their ceremony and reception at the same place and forgot to take into consideration the travel time for the Rabbi, nor did they confirm the time with him. He said everyone was bombed, including the priest, by time he got there.

My Rabbi was conservative and we waited until after Shabbos was over. I think sunset was 6:30 and our ceremony started at 7:30. Either way, it was after.

I'm hoping that since any rabbi who marries us will be reform (since we're interfaith) they'll be a little more lax and we can start it at 4;30 or 5pm!

I would have liked to do that too. Rabbi was conservative...good luck

If you go with a kosher caterer, GOOD LUCK!!!

The food will be stale, salads will be limp and meat would be frozen-reheated!! They will have to prepare everything before Shabbat, friday morning -afternoon.

We are getting married before Shabbos is over and have found many rabbis willing to perform such ceremonies. Keep in mind that you need to look for Reform rabbis.

It's very doable; don't be discouraged.

It really all depends on the Rabbi, and if the caterer is kosher. Shabbat ends early in the winter -like 5'ish and very late in the summer- like 9pm. Good luck!
