I am terrified of the chair and the height and all an I dont want to be embarrassed if they cant pick me up (not likely but it's a fear I have)
This causes me anxiety just thinking about it.
We are still doing the horah, just no chairs.
FHs cousin did this at her wedding and FILs said- oh no- you have to do the chair.
BUT I really dont wat to do it and I'm stressing about it.
FH doesnt care he says we dont have to if I dont want to.
Anyone not doing it?
I know its tradition and all but we are doign every other tradition and still doing the horah and FILS can go in the chair if they want.
TIA

Re: Jewish/Interfaith brides? Horah WITHOUT chairs ??
Oh please. Tradition is a Chuppah. Putting people up on a chair is not a holy commandment! It youre nervous, don't do it.

OMG Christine!!!!!!!!!!! I am sooooo happy you posted this. I have been meaning to but I keep forgetting. We are not doing it.
FH is deathly afraid of doing the chairs as well. Like, he'll have a panic attack up in the air....so I don't know what to do either. My parents are ok with it (they're the jewish side) but I don't know how we're going to stop people from bringing the chairs onto the dance floor and/or politely get them to go away if they do bring them on.

I think you do not have to do it! Is it a Religious act... or a celebratory act? If it is the celebration part,,, celebrate a diffrent way!

I was thinking of telling the bridal party and family that we arent doing it and havinig the maitre'd sorta police the perimiter and politely ask them to put the chairs back
I swear- if they try and force me into the chair-I WILL go and lock myself i the bridal suite.

Just make sure the band knows you are not doing it...so they dont announce it or try to get people together to do it

thats another thing- there is a light fixture/chandelier thing in the middle of the dance loor at my RH and its sorta low if you were to be up on a chair
even if they keep it to one side- there is no guarantee that the crowd wont move over

yeah, I think it's just going to be a matter of spreading the word...'no chairs'. We'll do a little do-see-do in the middle of the circle and what-not, but no chairs.
Honestly, they can't be upset with you, it's a valid fear and it's your wedding, and in the end, you need to be comfortable and happy. That's what I told my parents...at first they were like, well what will everyone do if you don't go up in chairs and I said to them that I'm not going to have my husband be scared to death at his own wedding that's not fair in the least. So everyone will just have to deal. We'll just ignorre/brush off the chair pushers and keep dancing.

I'm personally looking forward to doing the chair thing, but I'm concerned about my dad...he's got some physical problems and I dont know if it would be the best thing for him. I'm worried that people might try to force him into the chair.

yeah, sometimes I've heard them say something like 'lets get all the big strong men out here'...just so they know you arent doing the chairs.
