well you can...but most places now a days will just tell u that you have to go on their website and apply to jobs online. your probably better off just going to their websites than calling.

Re: Job advice- Is it weird if I
I haven't called, but I have actually gotten some responses from 'cold emailing'. I basically make up a generic cover letter that I put in the body of the email, attach my resume and send it to the HR email address of organizations I am interested in. If you do that for a ton of places chances are you will hear back from at least a couple!

Re: Job advice- Is it weird if I
i dont think its weird at all. with job hunting, you have nothing to lose, youll never see the people again/speak to them if you dont get it and if you get it...even if you were a pita, you cares, you got the job!!
butttt...a lot of times calling, youll just get the person answering the phone and even if they are hiring maybe, the receptionist wont know anytihng about it if they even know in the first place that they are hiring. they also usually dont want to disturb the boss or transfer someone who called randomly.
i would personally stop by (much harder for them to brush you off) plus theyll see you're not a crackhead. or like someone else said, research the company, try to find someones name and email in charge and email them
eta: ummmm starting the convo...when stopping by, dont start off my asking if they are hiring, when you first come in and see the first person, i would just say that you would like to drop off your resume. they might assume you are already aware that they are hiring so theyll put in on the persons desk who needs to have it. if they ask you if its for a specific position, then you can let them know thats its open...youre not sure if they are currently hiring but wanted to stop by either way to drop it off. once they have the resume, its better then them turning you away before they even have it (like if you asked if they were hiring and they could brush you off by just saying no or whateva)

Email and send your resume first. Then after 5-10 business days you can follow up by calling (P.S However, with follow up phone calls less is more!).

I say go for it. I would suggest googling the company first, seeing if you can apply online and then follow up with a phone call. We get so many applications that if I get a phone call, I will tell them to email me their resume and I'll take a look at it. It shows you're really eager to work at the company.

Re: Job advice- Is it weird if I
You have a better shot of checking a company's website or searching their name on Monster or Hot Jobs and then just sending them a resume directle referencing the job you are applying for.... I work in HR and we HATE it when people call to inquire about jobs... mainly just because I don't have the time to discuss with people what their credentials are and if they may be a fit for anything we have open right now. Our recruiter won't even answer the phone if she doesn't know the number because of this.

Re: Job advice- Is it weird if I
what everyone else said
if i answered the phone and someone asked me if we were hiring i honestly wouldn't know. i mean i'd know that we have been interviewing people but i dont know for what positions, etc. you'd be better off going on the website or just emailing or faxing your resume in

Re: Job advice- Is it weird if I
that's exactly how i ended up getting my job!! after a half hour of getting bumped around departments until i found the right person to talk to... my boss later said it showed 'determination.' LOL
of course some fields are different. healthcare can be totally different.
