i'm in the engineering field. mostly civil, construction related. i was looking for a job since august and had one interview come up rather quickly.....but it didnt work out in the end. then i got laid off in october and i finally got an offer today. took about a month.

its def harder than it was a year and a half ago when i graduated ...but not impossible. i just had to apply to as many jobs as possible on a daily basis.

I got laid off August 1st..23 days before my wedding! So once I got back from the HM, I started looking for a job..and still nothing. went on a few interviews..but they didn't work out.

I'm in the mortgage/real estate business. I'm a real estate paralegal..so it's definitely harder for me being that that field is so dead right now and so many mortgage lenders went under or are in bad shape. Right now, I'm concentrating on any paralegal or administrative assistant position I can get.

I'm a real estate paralegal and i'm just waiting to get laid off. It's so slow and quiet at work. I hate going to work and have absolutely nothing to do. I actually am going to start looking for a job in another field or different type of law before I lose my job. Its so tough to find a job now because of the economy.

With a little patience I'm sure you girls will find something just hang in there and be positive.

Re: job/work question (or question for those looking)

i work for the state but not as a perm employee. So the college I work for hired me working 35 hrs a week with no benefits over a year and a half ago. I was told by December/Jan i would have a review and a possible full time perm (line) position opened for me - guess what? there has been a hiring freeze for any non-essential personal in the state. They are even slowing down doing exams for not just college/schools/etc but police, us post office and fire dept.

Not finding any work available for our graduates, they keep pouring into alumni offices and our career dept looking for jobs for what they graduated in. What we can offer is basically what graduates don't want but now have to take such as service jobs. Macys/Target/BBB and some clerical positions at companies. The only exception is Nursing/Dental Hygiene/Engineering but even Engineering is getting hard to find on LI so many people are moving. Colleges themselves are hurting - less funding - cut backs - etc so the more elite colleges of LI are having enrollment drops but colleges like what I work for who have cheaper tuition are bursting with applications.

I did find some jobs on craigslist depending on what your looking for. BUT there are a ton of job fairs that are starting to pop up check out li press and local colleges. It just may not be the position you should be getting but it is a job.

I even fear general education is going to have to face cut backs soon enough. I heard a few more charter schools in LI will be closing and condensing. One teacher I had talked to said she hasn't been able to find a job at all since she graduated in June.

Bad times, but just take something that will pay the bills for now. That is what I would be doing if they lay me off.

My FH lost his job in May in the financial field. He started looking into alternative fields of work since he was not having any luck. He went on about 60 interviews and applied to over 150 jobs and he just got a job on Friday in the financial field.

When he was applying to jobs, he would go on one day and see 15 new jobs posted, and the next day they would be down. He would call them up and ask if the positions were filled so quickly, and they would say, 'we are on a hiring freeze' or 'we hired within.' It was really difficult but eventually he got a job.

Fh lost his job. The job he was hoping for with Geico didn't come through. hundreds applied for it.

He's been working at Macy's for 3 weeks. He is considered 'seasonal' which means he doesn't get benefits and may not have a job come February. His salary there barely covers anything.

And I am had all my overtime cut 2 weeks ago. So we are cancelling the wedding. I just have to find out from our venue what the policy is.

Yes, I work for the Post office...that company that delivers your RSVP's. Everyone does not realize that we are in SO MUCH TROUBLE fianceilly (SP?)
We started the year off with 2 bill deficit.
They are now not hiring anybody..total hiring freeze. They are forcing the clerks out of work -or trying to by offering early retirement packages. The automation of machines is taking over. They eliminated the daytime shift at the plant in bethpage so now only over night people. Those 85 or so daytime people need to find another job within.

We are state ... not GOvernment like everyone thinks. Big changes are coming within the post office.

My Best Friend is a Social Worker and lost her job a few weeks ago. She isn't even getting replies to the resumes she's sending out. I think she's gone on 1 interview, and they do want to hire her, but they put a hiring freeze out and their hands are tied. I can only imagine how frustrating it is for you guys!!!
