If it makes anyone feel any better...My company has been in chapter 11 for a year and a half.

Chapter 11 means that they are doing what they have to do (restructuring) BEFORE they go bankrupt.

Don't freakout!! Like I said...I have been in a company that has filed chapter 11 a while ago...They just cut back on certain things and let go of a few people.

Hope that helps some!

Right, but what happens if they try to restructure and they do go bankrupt. Then we are stuck....and no chance of getting any money back!

Re: John Anthonys - Bankrupt?????

mandy, my sentiments exactly...all this time and money...do we really want to take a chance on a 'what if'????
that is a HUGE expectation! I have been planning this since January 2002, nice and slow...however (and I giggle when I say this) I know there are no garauntees, in wedding planning and in life!
i await answers from my phone call placed to JA's, their lawyer's and my lawyer...

Re: John Anthonys - Bankrupt?????

ABSOLUTELY LADIES!
here's what I found on the Intranet re:Chapter 11 filing...
CHAPTER 11 REORGANIZATION

An individual may file under chapter 11; however, it is generally used to reorganize a business. Chapter 11 allows the debtor to continue its
business operations by means of a plan of reorganization, which must meet certain statutory criteria. By enacting Chapter 11, Congress gave
the debtor a chance to restructure its finances so that it may continue to operate, provide its employees with jobs, pay its creditors, and
produce a return for its stockholder. Because Chapter 11 envisions an ongoing business, the most likely persons to have knowledge of the
operation and details of the business are the existing management who normally continue operations during the Chapter 11 process. A major
rationale for business reorganizations is that the value of a business as an ongoing concern is greater that it would be if its assets were sold.
When a business develops financial difficulties, such as not being able to pay its creditors due to cash flow problems, it may consider filing a
Chapter 11 bankruptcy. If the business can extend or reduce its debts, or drastically lower its operating costs, it often can be returned to a
viable state. Generally, it is more economically efficient to reorganize than to liquidate, because doing so preserves jobs and assets.
Cooperation among the various interests, however, is crucial to a successful reorganization.

Read that last line especially...in my opinion, 'various interests' means vendors JA's deals with. Additionally, a bankruptcy filing undermines the confidence of vendors who trust the corporation needs to stay afloat

Just spoke to a catering manager. She said that it won't affect anyone because they are still doing business. Then I asked about what happens if they can' t restructure and have to file Chapter 7. She said that she wasn't sure and would have someone call me back.

I am waiting to hear from Phyliss. I am trying to see if we can get my deposit back. Bridgeview said that they are available for that night. I wish us luck!

Good luck, Aliaspook. I'm trying to do the same thing tonight.

Filing for chapter 11 does not mean they are going out of business.

Just as an example, Macy's filed for chapter 11 6 years ago & they are still in business....don't worry.

Please let us know how things go. My sisters best friend was gonna have her wedding there but now may cancel. I told her to hold out and I would see what you ladies find out.

Ok, Bridgeview would match my package at JA's less my centerpieces. Would also make the snowflake cake that I like. I liked it there alot, I loved teh set up of the bridalsuite and how it over looked the cocktail hour. BUt I didn't get the 'I LOVE THIS PLACE!' feeling like I did at JA's.

Angelo from JA's said that we should all be ok. He said that from now until thios gets settled, he is willing to give me my deposit back. I didn't want it back, I waant my reception there! I am goign to make my decision next week. My inivtations are already done and this is annoying me beacsue no matter where I go, I will have to spend more money to have them redone, as well as losing out on the centerpieces.

Well at least he is willing to give you your deposit back. I know its not exactly what you want but if you have to switch its better than having to switch AND lose money! By the way is Angelo the owner that is opening the new retaurant 'Gatsby' in West Islip cause how can he open a new one with all this going on with JA's.

Re: John Anthonys - Bankrupt?????

He was opening that place even before the owner died. I guess he can't just stop everything because the brothers are fighting. He is not part of the family that owns it, he is the general manager.

I have to make a very difficult decision this week. Angelo also said that he confident that they will be around for my wedding, it's just a fight between the brothers. He also blocked it off so I am the only wedding that night and said we can use the lounge for 1/2 of hospitality plus my 1 hour cocktail hour in the smaller reception room and 4 hour reception in the upstairs room.
I don't know what to do now.

Just wanted to add some of my thoughts...for those getting married at JA within the next couple of months, I would not be concerned at all. It takes a company months to even close everything down. Even those of you that are getting married there next year, you probably don't have to worry about it. Many companies file for C.11 and they continue to operate. That being said, it probably wouldn't hurt you to look at other options and see if there's something else that you like just as much.

Re: John Anthonys - Bankrupt?????

aliaspook and the other JA brides...let me know your final decision. Basically my Dad got the exact same answer as did Laurie. But what do we do? This is a tough decision...aliaspook, I completely agree, I booked JA's in July 2002! We looked at 13 otherplaces and I really LOVE JA's...but I can't imagine sweating this out for the next 11 months when I can do something about it now, ya know?
Like I said before, it's a HUGE what if? What if they can't resturcture? What if they can't pay off the debt? What if thet sell JA's?
OR what if this restructure works, they continue to do business as usual, but I already got my deposit and decided to back out?
I go in to work at noon, I am going to make calls to other places to see what is available for my date. Unfortunately being 400 miles away, I can't just stop in to places to check them out...wow, I can't believe I am going to start this process over...

Re: John Anthonys - Bankrupt?????

Hi girls. Got the same response from Angelo last night also. He said that if things aren't back up to speed in a month, he would give us our deposit back...although I'm not really sure that in a month they would actually tell us the truth about that. I really want my reception there too but not sure if it is worth all of the worry for the next year.

Re: John Anthonys - Bankrupt?????

I took off work a 1/2 day this morning trying to collect my thoughts and make a decision. I have been calling around to our 1st, 2nd, 3rd choice places (from what i can remember! FH and I booked last year in June 2002!)..and they are pretty much booked already for our date. I guess now I am kinda getting sad...like it's not true. Do we stay with JA's and hope for the best? I guess it's just 'cause it had meaning to have it there...my church where i went to catholic school (where I'm getting married) is in Babylon, and JA's is right there, on the Bay I grew up clamming in.....I have been talking about this place to my Rochester friends for a year...i guess I'm just having a tiny pity party...so silly, I know! It will all work out!!! (i keep telling myself!)
