LOL! I can't believe I beat people to that punch.
Ok on to the very serious subject at hand. Are there any hobbies that she is into?

How active is she? Does she have hobbies?
Taking her to dinner and a broadway show would be a great gift if she's up to it.

Seriously get her a Grandma journal so she can record the family history, her life and memories of her 80 years!

I was going to say something similar, or perhaps a nice shot of all her grandchildren or extended family? (depending on family dynamics and how well everyone gets along, of course - Iknow getting a group together isn't really easy)
WHen my grandmother turned 90, we were at a loss what to give her , my brother went and had restored a lot of old , fading photographs my grandmother had of my grandfather, her parents, her siblings, etc and scrapbooked them for her.. as well as restored some old movies and had them put onto videotape (at the time DVD was pretty rare)
Is Mike's grandma very active? Would she enjoy a show or something similar?

Sometimes for holidays I get my grandma a GC for the supermarket she goes to. Not fun, but something she will use.

If she's on a fixed income, it might be nice to do a basket of things she likes and uses often. My nana loves tea and shortbread cookies, so my mom would get ones that were a little pricier than my nana would normally get for herself. She'd also get magazines, since she often didn't usually spend the money on things like that either. My mom would really dress the basket up so it looked nice.
My nana also likes expensive brandy.
I know that's not a lot, but we are not big gift givers on birthdays. And it's hard with seniors, because they may not have lots of space for knick-knacks, etc. My brothers and I would also give her gift certificates for groceries- as I said, she is on a fixed income and that was less awkward than cash. She really liked the grocery gc's.

Re: Just got an invite in the mail...
Well heres the deal. Mikes dads family are always fighting. He has 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Mikes dad I think told off one of the brothers about his wife shes a b!tch and their 2 teenage daughters are even worse. They act so stuck up and when ever there is a family thing (they we don't throw) they stick their noses up in the air and ignore us. At the funeral (and Wake) she didn't say hello to us till we were leaving the church. Then when we were at the cemetery the b!tch aunt went and got flowers and gave them to all the grandchildren except us and Mikes sisters 4 kids who were 11 and 8 at the time.
None of them came to Our engagment party or my shower. The two sisters came to our wedding. One brother sent a gift and the other brother with the B!tch wife and two Stuck up b!tch daughter didn't even send a card. P!SSED ME OFF. How could you treat your nephew like that not even a card I would never no matter how bad I hate my brother.
So needless to say we don't see Grandma that much she lives in NJ and we can't get the family together but I do like the idea of the Food GC's
