Not true in all cases. DH could go down and make the same he makes here. I would end of taking a pay cut, but it would be worth it to me.

I've been looking online at homes in Virginia in my Mom's town. It makes me sick when I see how much houses are in NY compared to other places.
1st home is $148,000 2nd home is $199,000 3rd home is $264,000 4th home is $399,000
There are tons of houses in eery price rance from $100,000 all the way to $1million. I wish DH would agree to sell our home here and move!
there is literally NO BACKYARD on that third house!!!

I like #2 and #4. My brother lives in Annandale and works in DC and he makes really good money...so you cannot say that you will make half of what you are making here...I guess it all depends on the field you work in. Scott

Yeah I see that. I was just looking quickly online. I saved about 40 houses so I just posted some quick.
Guess it just means less to mow? and really good sleigh riding in the winter!

My Mom lives in Roanoke, VA. It's beautiful there. I lived there for 2 yrs when I was 20-21 and I loved it. It's about 2.5 hrs south of Arlington.

i agree, salaries are not all that different. my cousin lives in FL and both she and her husband make a VERY decent salary. they live in a HUGE gorgeous home, have 2 new cars and take vacations every year.

Just a little FYI on that link - it shows you what salary you would need to make that would be comparable to your NY salary - but it doesn't tell you what you WOULD be making if you moved from NY to another state.
I agree that many jobs will pay less outside of NY/NYC. But, not all. That link is helpful, but just a generality really.
Like I said before I know DH would make as much as he does now, if not more. I would take a cut.
But, the quality of life (slower pace, nicer people, less crime, less stress) is better, IMO. I'm burnt out.
We have a house on LI and I work in NYC. I would move in VA (Virgina...not West VA) in a heartbeat.

In our case we would both take HUGE pay cuts and I personally would rather retire on my NY salary and pension then lets say what I would make in West Virginia. But those house are tempting!

Yeah it definately depends on what your career is and other things like pension, family, etc...
In our case, we would sell our home here, pay off the mortgage and buy a house in VA outright and not have any mortgage at all ...so a pay cut by me wouldn't be a big deal.

that is what the house prices are like here in St. Louis. Much better. And the neighborhoods and school districts are great!!!
Just FYI: I make 9K MORE here than I did at the exact same job I had in NYC. DH would have to take a 50% pay cut in his job for us to move to NY. So you don't always make more $$ in NY.
