Kawaii or Big Island?

We are definitely going to Maui! Here's the thing-our budget allows for another Island.... I heard that Four Seasons on Big Island is beyond awesome! But is Kawaii a better place to go? Why is Kawaii better? And lastly, Where is the best hotel to stay at? Please help!

I say DEFINITELY Kauai, but it truly depends on what you're looking for. I think the BIg Island will give you a lot to do, ubt you're already going to Maui for that.'
I've heard Kauai is like the Beauty of Hawaii, the one w/the most natural beauty and romance, perfect for honeymooners. There's enough to do, but you really get the HM feel there. I'm staying at the Hyatt, it's suppossed to be really nice, 5 star. Another one I've heard a lot about is the Princeville, more exclusive though and further away from activities. . .

We are going to Kauai & Maui. I heard that Kauai is just sooo beautiful and more of a relaxing place to go. We figured Maui would be more of a party spot so we are doing both. Let me know if you have more questions. The Hyatt on Kauai is supposed to be one of the nicest hotels. I hear great things about it!

I went thru the same debate when I planned.

I chose Kauai and say that is the way to go. It is so gorgeous...I coudn't imagine missing it!!!!! I stayed at the Grand Wailea in Maui and the Hyatt Regency in Kauai. I recommend staying either there or the Princeville (I visited it and it is so nice). The weather is just nicer (more often) by the Hyatt. When I went to the Princeville it was a little cloudy and humid but it was perfect by the Hyatt. Both are great hotels.

I really wanted to go to the 4 Seasons on the Big Islad because I hear it is amazing (so much better than the on in Maui - have a friend who works for teh 4 Seasons and stayed at both). We considered either that or Kona Village. In the end, I just heard so much great things about Kauai I had to go there instead of the Big Island.

Let me know if you have more ?'s or need more info!

Kauai!!! Like I said in my other post, i was there and I LOVE it!!! It's so peaceful and beautiful. They don't allow any buildings to be build taller than a coconut tree, so it doesn't block the view. Waimaia canyon is breathtaking!! Go horseback riding, takes you to some gorgeous views! Hanalai is a nice small town to visit for shopping and eating (had a family friend with a shaved ice shop there, not anymore though). Princeville is nice for brunch! I think its pricey to stay there, so just brunch it.

I haven't been in years, but I would also say Kauai.

You all are making me want to go back soooo badly. It is so beautiful there.

Kauai is defintely beautiful and very calm. It is a nice complement to Maui. We stayed at the Princeville, it was beautiful but a bit too stuffy for my taste. You have to go to Hanelai Bay, it is beautiful. Try to eat at the Blue Dolphin if you do. There is also a very cool Mexican place on the main road in Kapaa

Hiya. I'm beginning to see a pattern between us. Did you get my FM about Ernie by the way? For my honeymoon I went to the Halekulani in Oahu, the Hyatt on Kauai, and then the Four Seasons on Maui.

I've also heard that the Four Seasons on the Big Island is amazing, but that the Big Island itself requires some adventuring spirit to truly enjoy. If you are willing to take long hikes, the Big Island is the only place you can see an active volcano, which sound amazing. However, for me and DH, we wanted a pair of lounge chairs and a smoothie with an umbrella in it.

The Hyatt in Kauai is very nice, but I have to admit I was somewhat disappointed with the room itself. Compared to the Four Seasons and the Halekulani which had these amazing bathrooms with separate shower and huge bath tubs, the room at the Hyatt seemed like a Ramada off the highway with Hawaii decoration. The food at the Hyatt was also a step down from the Four Seasons and Halekulani. That aside, the grounds, pools, and beach were breathtaking. Kauai is the least developed of the islands, and is very lush. The center of the island is among the rainiest places on earth. The other 'best' hotel on the island is the Princeville, which is upscale, but considered un-Hawaiian, and generally gets more rain then the Hyatt.

Not to add complication to your planning, but our favorite hotel was the Halekulani on Oahu. They actually outdid the Four Seasons in terms of service. If you want to hear more about it let me know.

Also, Take the NaPali Coast boatride!!! GORGEOUS!!! You can see where they filmed King Kong and Jurassic Park.

Re: Kauai or Big Island?

Another vote for Kauai. My husband and I loved it so much we have been accumulating Marriot points so we can go back this year after Xmas (so we can stay for free since the airfare will cost $$$).
Kauai is gorgeous and relaxing and if you love hiking, nature, and just hanging out at the beach, you will love it.

The Big Island is more rugged and has great hiking, and the volcano is currently very active. My only regret is we didn't have enough time to do at least a day trip there from Maui. It would have been cool to see lava close up (but not too close!). You can even just do a fly by of the volcano from Maui without landing. When we go back we are spending most of our time on Kauai and will just do an overnight trip to the Big Island.

Re: Kawaii or Big Island?

I guess the Four Seasons on Big Island is pretty, but if I am not going to like the activites that surround.... I seem to be hearing a resounding YES to Kawai and although their are mixed reviews, the Hyatt appears to be the best! Thanks everyone for the opinion....

You girls are making me want to go to Hawaii!!! I notice a lot of you change islands throughout your visit. Is it necessary? Also, exactly how long does it take to get there?

Re: Kawaii or Big Island?

Fly direct if you can, otherwise its a very long trip. It was worth it, though when we arrived.

Valenia, We had the opposite experience! Had a GORGEOUS room at the Hyatt, Kauaii ... ocean view ... upgraded ... and didn't do so well on the Big Island (Waikaloa). Thumbs down on accomodations ... and we spent more per night than in Kauaii. I wish I'd known or read more b/f booking, but Vinnie was in charge, and we listened to our travel agent .

We did see lots of the island, though ... a full report to follow. The volcano was amazing. and the sightseeing made the trip worth going. We did all of our relaxing on Kauaii & Mauii.

BTW .. I can't say this enough ... GET THE HAWAII FOR DUMMIES BOOK ! It was the best thing we bought!
