Ok so I loveeeeeeeee my Italian last name and am very sad and stubborn to give it up entirely (especially since FH has the opposite of an Italian last name ) So anyway, I was thinking of maybe turning my last name into my middle name and then taking his last name as my new last name. Is anyone else thinking of doing this? I've heard of some people doing it, and it would just really make me happy to not lose the name completely.

Re: Keeping your name?
I was never considering this, but now that my dad has passed away I am considering to keep the name alive. I'm the last one left with this name, and I think he'd like for me to keep it somehow. IDK though bc I'm so traditional and am really looking forward to taking FH's name.

Re: Keeping your name?
I'm going to take my FH's last name when I get married but if FH and I havea girl my last name will become the girls middle name. My dad had 2 girls so we are basically it with carrying on the family name.

Re: Keeping your name?
i am so very sad about changing my name but when i was growing up in a divorced household it made me very sad that everyone did not have the same last name so i promised myself as a little girl that when i have a family everyone will have the same last name ... so I am changing it for the little girl inside of me I am going to make my last name my middle name and my daughters middle name just call me Mrs Laffey (puke noise)

Me too! Except we might do it for a boy.
All of my friends are sad about me changing my name bc they all call me by my last name. They said they're going to keep doing that even if I do change it.

Re: Keeping your name?
I am probably going to change mine all together.. I am a little sad about it, but my name wouldn't really sound too good if it was hyphenated so I don't think I am going to do it..

Re: Keeping your name?
I was considering this but now not sure. I think I will just keep my name for a while. I know its mean but my last name is awesome and his totally sux. He got made fun of his whole life for it and still does. People at my job already make fun of m for my 'future name' (b/c those people are mean).
So I think I will keep mine and consider changing to his when we have kids or something. I just cant part with it yet. Its been my name for 26 years and everyone i know calls me by my last name not my first.... I just cant do it!!

Re: Keeping your name?
I know how you feel .. I love my italian last name too .. my FH is Italian so I dont mind taking his .. you can do the middle name thing, you might as well do it if you are taking his last name because that way you only change it once

Re: Keeping your name?
If changing your name makes you unhappy in the slightest, why on earth would you consider changing it?
I have many friends who have taken their husbands last names, and I love and respect them all. It is everyone's choice, and if it is something that fills you with joy and excitement, then absolutely do it.
However, for me I feel like it is the wrong choice. It is a tradition that originally meant that the bride was no longer part of her own family, but her new husband's, and it was used to imply ownership. I know that the tradition no longer translates that way, but I have been Suzanne R. since the day I was born, and just because I am marrying the man I love, doesn't mean that I am a different person.
If the thought of changing it upsets you, then you have to ask yourself, for whom are you changing it? Would your FH want you to be unhappy? Would he or his family be offended? And if so, why?
You will be the one signing your name for the rest of your life. Just make sure it's the one you want.
Either decision you make, it is your choice. Just make sure the choice is for you, and you are making it for your own reasons. And if you think 'Well, it's not just about me now, it's about both of us', then ask him how he feels about changing his name.
Best of luck, and congratulations on either decision. Both are great, but only one is right for you.

Re: Keeping your name?
My FH has a rough last name to take (not that is long but what it sounds like lol)....he told me I don't have to change mine but I feel bad and I want my kids to have the same last name I do. I think I might wait and change it eventually or something.
