Re: Keeping your name?

I am very proud of my Croatian heritage and am not thrilled to give up my name but I am. I want to have the same last name as my future children (God willing). also...I IMO, my mother took my fathers name for a reason...so why wouldnt I do the same for the man that I love.... I will still always be a Kirsic in my heart and actually plan on tattooing it on my ankle in the ancient Slavic alphabet in honor of my fathers heritage.

If changing your name makes you unhappy in the slightest, why on earth would you consider changing it?

I have many friends who have taken their husbands last names, and I love and respect them all. It is everyone's choice, and if it is something that fills you with joy and excitement, then absolutely do it.

However, for me I feel like it is the wrong choice. It is a tradition that originally meant that the bride was no longer part of her own family, but her new husband's, and it was used to imply ownership. I know that the tradition no longer translates that way, but I have been Suzanne R. since the day I was born, and just because I am marrying the man I love, doesn't mean that I am a different person.

If the thought of changing it upsets you, then you have to ask yourself, for whom are you changing it? Would your FH want you to be unhappy? Would he or his family be offended? And if so, why?

You will be the one signing your name for the rest of your life. Just make sure it's the one you want.

Either decision you make, it is your choice. Just make sure the choice is for you, and you are making it for your own reasons. And if you think 'Well, it's not just about me now, it's about both of us', then ask him how he feels about changing his name.

Best of luck, and congratulations on either decision. Both are great, but only one is right for you.

Even though I am very upset about changing my name ...I am doing it for my future family. It means a lot to me that everyone under my roof shares the same name. I am very excited for us to be joined together under one name, like a team if you will

PROBM, I totally get it, and completely understand. Especially considering your experience as a child, I think your decision makes a lot of sense. I think in the end, your new name will give you a lot of joy, because it sounds like you're making the decision for the right reasons.

I am doing this too -- But I am also keeping my current middle name, so I guess I will have a four part name.

i am changing my name. My dad makes a little bit of a fuss about it jokingly, but i will change my name. At work i will use both names for a while just so people who i've done business with can get used to it, and then i'll change it

I'm doing that as well. I'm also planning to have all my kids' middle names as my maiden name. There are no boys in my family so it's my way of keeping the name going.

Ok so I loveeeeeeeee my Italian last name and am very sad and stubborn to give it up entirely (especially since FH has the opposite of an Italian last name ) So anyway, I was thinking of maybe turning my last name into my middle name and then taking his last name as my new last name. Is anyone else thinking of doing this? I've heard of some people doing it, and it would just really make me happy to not lose the name completely.

I want to do the same thing but my FH is strongly against it, so i guess i am changing my name!!!

I'm not changing my last name, FH is fine with it, I thought about hyphenating my last name and his, but 2 long italian last names, too much writing! I love my name, I'm the last person in the family with it aside from my dad, and I want to keep the name alive, you make the choice best for you.
