I am taking a course in Parenting right now, and we had a very long discussion about how to consult with parents who come to you with the question of co-sleeping.

It really depends on the reasons for cosleeping. I personally am not in favor of it, but if I was helping a parent figure out what to do, I would have to be neutral. However, I would provide the parent with all the safety precautions, should they choose to cosleep. There are lot of things parents need to do to make cosleeping safe for their child, and there are also many alternatives, like having an infant bassinet that attaches to the bed, rather than having an infant sleeping in the bed.

Children who cosleep wake up much more frequently than those who don't, and as others have said, it definitely has an impact on the parental relationship. Some parents get VERY creative about ways to have sexual relations.

For those parents into attachment parenting, there are so many other ways to foster parent-child attachment during the day. Sleeping without your child will not negatively impact your child's attachment to you.

However, we have to remember that many cultures have practiced cosleeping for years. It seems strange to us because we live in a culture that promotes independence and individuality.

When people talk about cosleeping, they arent talking about letting their child crawl into bed when they have a nightmare or when there's a thunderstorm. They do it as a daily practice.

Incidentally, one of my friends babysits for two 5 year old boys who still sleep with their single mother even though they have their own beds. It is definitley more for her benefit than for theirs..she started keeping them there for her own comfort, which is just wrong, IMO!

IMO I think that each parent and child have to decide what works for them

I read those articles about attachment parenting, and I tired to have an open mind, but it just seemed really overindulgent to me. I think a HUGE part of why so mnay marrages are falling apart these days is because the ENTIRE focus of the family is on the children. it's a nice concept, but I don't think it's healthy for the parents or the children

DH and I sleep in our b-day suits, I don't think our children will want to co-sleep with us.

what I meant by that is that you know your child and if you feel that they cant sleep without you then that is a problem....but occasionally I dont seem the harm in it as long as your child isnt dependent on you sleeping with them
