kind of a spin-off

Original post by yelley77

If you can give your child one thing that you had or didn't have from your childhood, what would it be?

(it can be advice, a trip, a book, etc)

Re: kind of a spin-off

funds for college ... funds for a wedding for our kids..

neither of our parent's could give us any of this, so we would like to give our kids that.

I want to give them soo much...hmmm.

The thing I'd want to give them most is what I had...two loving parents that while strict helped me develop into who I am today.

I realy hope that I can give my kids all that my parents gave me. Yes, they were VERY strict BUT they both did everything for me. I never had to do chores or ANYTHING around the house. The only thing they wanted me to do was my school work. I was always top of my class, so I guess it would have been different if I wasn't doing well. They didn't WANT me to get a job but I chose to at 14. They wanted to pay for college but I took out student loans.

Even with the wedding, they did NOT have the money but they gave us so much help with everything. Heck, we live RENT FREE upstairs.

They don't want ANY money, although I do force them to accept sometimes. THey are like this with al of us and when you ask them why they give so much they get all shocked like 'well, you are our children - what else would we do?'

They would never turn down babysitting grandchildren no matter what other plans they have. If I asked them for a million dollars tomorrow they would struggle until they could give it to us. I REALLY want to be like this with my kids. I know too many parents that say 'we dont have money to contribute to your college but we will be in Cabo for the next month' I know it is their choice what they do with their money but I hope that I can be more like my parents

Sorry for being so longwinded today i have hte day off and dont have to sneak at work!!

Karate lessons...I think they give people more confidence...I was always shy and insecure growing up...I still am a little, but I think I know how to hide it a little better

Same here!! As soon as the kid can walk, I want him or her in martial arts. They learn about not only self defense, but self control, disipline and like you mentioned, confidence.

this may sound silly but i never learned how to ride a bicycle, so i will be sure to teach my kid at a young age how to ride a bike....

I would def take them to Disney--I only went like 3 years ago for the first time. I would def have family vacations. My dad was always away for work and my mom took care of us herself, so we didn't get a chance to go anywhere in the summer cause she was always working. I also want to give them someone to come home to after school--I was a latch-key kid and I hated it.

this would be DH's! he never went as a kid (i went for my 16th bday) because his parents only ever took the kids to portugal. we went in Sept, and that was his first time. he enjoyed it, but he really can't wait til we have kids and we can go with them, and see how much they enjoy it.

A world where little girls can stay little girls past the age of 11 with out having to worry about what size jeans they wear..what size bra they wear and how many braclets they have showing how far they've gone with a boy!!!!!

A world where the little girls don't know what a BJ is until at least the age of 17!!!!!!

A world where little boys only worry about getting grass stains on their jeans and the repercussions from mom instead of what drug to try next and which girl I can get to touch me next.

Alot of great answers and some i can relate to.

Its funny someone said karate lessons, I definitely want my kids to take martial arts ESPECIALLY daughters. Its so scary when you have daughters and once they become teenagers and going out. I remember my poor mother not sleeping until i got home and of course back then I thought it was so ridiculous and i was so grown but its scary out there and think this can be an advantage, of course not every situation it can help but makes it betters. Not only that but from a young age be very involved in other stuff, such as dance classes, sports such as baseball or whatever they like, gymnastics. I see the difference growing up with kids who did all these activities and kids who didn't and ive read studies about it too. My fh was somebody who grew up going to little league from age 4, took martial arts, gymnastics although not long, pee wee football and so on. I didn't so i was out hanging out on the streets after school instead as a young teenager.

Another thing that again as a kid i wanted and thought it was ridiculous to be forced to do this but now I feel so differently, but I rather my kids go to prep school, private school but not public school.

Siblings-i am an only child so bc of that I want a big family

I want my kids to have parents that dont fight alot in front of the kids. I am going to try my hardest with this. If we are mad, we will do it when we are alone and not for the kids to hear us. I remember as a kid listening to that and witnessing and how horrible it was

I know i always say i want to go and Fh and i were going to go but then we did other things instead. Even when fh and i went to florida twice it was a bit of a drive from where we were and we just didn't. I know i cant wait until i finally go

Oh Denise you reminded me....I definitely want my children to go to Private or Catholic school. I went to Catholic School my whole life and enjoyed it. I think I would def be a different person if I went to public school- I dont think public school is bad at all. I just feel there is something about private/catholic schools i guess since i grew up going to one. I would never force my child to go though if they did not enjoy it i wouldnt make them go!

I went to public school and my parents tried to force me to go to private school. I see the difference and I will force my kids hahaha jk, if they hated it that much and were miserable it would be different. But if they go from a young age then I think they'd be fine with it. My parents wanted me to go to a prep school when I was in HS so it was a bit late for me personally. WOW its funny all the things i hated when i was younger and now i understand my parents lol
