so FH and i went on monday to pick the menu and make some final decisions.. well.. i thought we were only going to make menu choices and make a payment as well as pick out napkin color.. WELL to my surprise i was picking out my cake as well.. and to be honest the lady we sat down with was very nice but i felt that she was a bit on the pushy side and i dont know if it was just because i was caught off guard.
but what i thought would happen was that i would get a list of what come with the package and then all the extras as well as a bunch of pics to look at then taste THEN PICK!!!
well i got none of the above!! i got a book with about 10 pics and it was all that was included in the package.. when i asked about doing something different she poo-pooed my ideas and told me it was not worth my money.. so i had a choice of yellow cake or chocolate and a choice of 4 fillings END OF STORY!! im kinda upset.. what do you girls think??

Re: kinda upset with my RH...
I would go back with a picture of something you want and tell her you want your cake to be this and if it's a little extra, then whatever.
Is there anyone else you can meet with about the cake?

Re: kinda upset with my RH...
from what i know RH's do certain cakes only just a few designs and flavors. Many you have to pay extra to upgrade your cake. ALthough many RH's do have alot of flavors and many will say they'll try to duplicate what you want but also depends alot on the design

I would insist they listen to your ideas - even if you have to go to management. She didn't say they wouldn't do what you asked, she said 'it wasn't worth the $$', which tells me they can make accommodations. And if it's a case of them making other options astronomically priced just so you're discouraged from requesting them, still stand your ground!
One thing I've learned about 'pushy' people - push back harder and most will eventually cave.

i would find out what bakery they use and go directly there. Speak to a manager and see what choices you have.

Another thought - you mention it's part of a package. Is there anything else in the package you could do without as a trade off for upgrading your cake?

Re: kinda upset with my RH...
We picked our cake out when we made the menu choices as well ... I think that might be pretty standard?
The only booklet with info from the hall we really got was the one from when we first looked at the hall .... and when we made our menu choices, we got a folder that had the seating plan paperwork, and a form to fill out with our vendor information to be brought in when we did our finals the week of the wedding.
Are you upset because of the limited choices for the cake? The way you were treated by the cake person? That you didn't get choices to go home with? Or all of the above?

I agree, i think this is how most Rh's do it. I went on Monday to do my menu and we do the CH, then dinner and then she got to cake and she had a sheet with all the flavors, were not getting it from our RH so i said we have our own cake, but otherwise she just handed us a sheet with the flavors and didnt seem like we were going to get a tasting if we were going to use their cake
I remember for my e-party it was the same thing, they showed us a book with a few pics to pick a design and list of flavors

to be honest a little of all of them.. the only upgrade i was aksing for was red velvet cake (thats my fav) and she flat out told me and FH that it wasnt very good and she would never recommend it! (so right there FH SAID NO WAY!!! im not paying extra for something thats not good and if the BM is saying its not good then its Not!)
i was asking for all the upgrades and she offered NONE!!! i dont care about the up charges i wanted to see what they were going to offer and she gave nothing ... worse part is shes a PART OWNER!! so i was a bit confused!!!

Re: kinda upset with my RH...
thanks girls for all your responses... i guess i just didnt do enough investigating cuz if i knew it was going to be like this i would have gone elsewhere and got the cake from an outsider... but it comes with the price of the hall!! to be honest its really not that big of a deal.. i dont really eat cake anyway i was just very disapointed in the way i was treated!

I also wanted to add that we never had an opportunity to taste cake options.
Our hall actually doesn't use an outside baker, so that wouldn't be an option anyway.
Just wanted to mention that so you're not surprised in case your hall doesn't use an outside baker.

Are you having a Vienese hour? If so, the cake will be an afterthought to most of your guests.

Re: kinda upset with my RH...
Hmmmm .... well, its not likely to work (it wouldn't have with our hall), but it could be worth asking ... to find out if you can NOT get the cake from them, and use that part of the cost towards something else ... like Viennese, an extra cocktail hour station, etc.
You probably do have time to get the cake from an outside baker if you want.
I do kinda agree with your FH though, if the BM is saying that the type of cake you wanted isn't that good, then I wouldn't spend the extra money to upgrade to that. Is it possible that she meant 'their version of red velvet cake isn't that good'???
